I just watched the Fisher fight from yesterday and there is a long way to go. In the next 8 - 10 fights, Eddie Hearn must find some "knock over jobs" and then they must try to teach him to box and develop him in training It will require a lot of patience.
I can see why some people would find it irritating, but I think Fisher and his family are good people. They good deeds (ie giving away tickets to a fan who couldn't afford it) but not in a self-congratulatory Anthony Fowler way. I think all the jokey stuff is pretty harmless really. I also think Fisher isn't being marketed as the next big thing as such, more as a likeable guy with a good local following. That's good for boxing I think. If we push more limited fighters and celebrate smaller achievements (ie British titles etc) it'll help erode the misconception that the only fighters that matter are undefeated ones.
It's going to be tough for him to develop with that following though. He's essentially a nobody that has to perform like a somebody because of all this celebrity.
A lot of hisnwork was very reminiscent of a weatherspoons punch up. He was missing by actual feet at points
I heard he was quite average yesterday. Seems to lack stamina and runs out of ideas if he doesn't KO them in the first few rounds.
In cricket terms, if he was bowling, a lot of time with his wild right hand, he would have been on about 24th stump
He reminded me of a mate who once started a fight in a kebab shop. He did a Wilder-style windmill punch, missed by a good foot and a half, spun on some spilled chilli sauce and landed on his backside. If he'd been wearing lesser footwear Johnny would have pivoted like an ice dancer last night.
He’s 4-0 people with very little amateur experience. Same as Wardley, we shouldn’t really know about these guys for 15 fights or so.. but the social media world, the matchroom business plan and the pound notes are launching them to the casual fan base far too soon. Shame as I think they’ll not be given the opportunity to develop. People on here already righting Fisher off and talking like his 20 fighters in.
Earn sets up many fighters to be disliked and ridiculed and here is another one. Nothing to dislike about the guy who will do well to win the British Title with what looks like his limited boxing ability. The generic 'going far' and 'huge test' etc against a man who stole Shanny's shorts is really sticking unnecessary pressure on the fighter along with his slot on the card.
I agree, Jurgen. Matchroom must take the foot off the pedal. Fisher must be moved down on the card and can possibly be used as opening fight on DAZN´s main broadcast.
