Nah, check out Dickson Experimental Sound Film, which was shot in 1894 or 1895. THAT'S the first sound film. Fitz was a tough little man who could hit like a mule. His fight against Johnson, whom he truly respected, was not much of a fight at all, due to Fitz not being completely healthy.
Than if they had sound in the 1890's?? And film was just made, than why the 2 decades of slient films?
Those interviews sound interesting can you post a thread when there up on Youtube so I can make sure I check it out. Cheers.
Found this great article about Joe Choynski a lot of interesting quotes from fighters he fought and some detailed accounts on some of his most memorable fights. http://fightbeat.com/email2friend.php?AT=480
It will be my pleasure. I also remember the intrigue I felt, when I first heard the men conversing about thier careers and related topics. Please stay tuned, as the video is now in the hands of a good friend, and a local of the town.
I'm currently browsing a translation of a French newspaper series Johnson did, 'My Life and Battles'. He said Fitz made a genuine effort to get in shape, but was a shell of his former self. Johnson said the fight did more for his reputation than had his wins over much tougher opponents (tougher at the time he fought them, of course). Johnson said he went for the early KO because he realized that, if the fight had been longer, people would have realized Fitzsimmons was shot and questioned why Johnson hadn't put him away.
It is well know that Jack Johnson called Jeffries the best fighter ever (including himself) but I too have wondered prime for prime what would happen I don't think anyone could make the case that it would be any thing other than an evenly fought bout-on paper-at least, and we all know how those go.
Prime for Prime, Jeff vs Johnson would be a lot closer than what relly happen. A pretty even fight imo that could go either way. Still think Johnson could beat Fitz because of size, but this is like talking about the Ali Holmes fight or something in that order. Fitz was far from the terror he was in the 1880's and 1890's when Johnson beat him. So a prime match up would last longer. Still would not be shock if Fitz won, because of Fitz's amazing power of couse.
