Ok, you guys live in a fantasy world with this thinking you dont have to take the title, in the eyes of the judges. Wait, did it just happen? Aren't we commenting on a thread where it MAY HAVE happened? Ya, I thought so. LOL
The fights are judged round by round, then added up. What are you saying? If a judge thought Gus won the first round they mark that down and it is collected and taken away. This happens every round for all three judges then it is added up. Do you think they then do some mathematical equation that favours the champion a few percent? How COULD they implement what you are saying?
Sherdog's UFC forum is a cesspool, often worse than this forum's main board. Combat sports tend to attract a lot of dumbasses in addition to the chessmasters and fans of technique and strategy.
Simple. Judges with that mindset will score close, indecisive rounds for the champion. Trading jabs? Champ's popped more. Firefight? Champ got the better in the exchange. Champ gets a takedown? Devastating control! Champ gets taken down, but holds and it gets stood up? Champ gets credit for defense. Lather, rinse, repeat. That is why it is not only common parlance in the sport, but indeed has become the second commandment (behind "don't you dare miss weight") to say "don't leave it in the hands of the judges."
That's not a criteria by which judges are told to score fights though. As I Said there may be a subconcious factor that leads them to do this, but that's no different to a crowd swaying a judges view by cheering loudly when one fighter lands. The fight was, in my opinion, scored perfectly. I do not think it was a bad decision let alone a robbery at all.
Exactly. Doesn't make it right, but it happens all the time. I think Jones did enough to win 3 rounds in this fight anyway, so I dont think it comes into play here, but Gus would have had to A LOT to win 3 individual rounds. If they give the first 2 to Gus, they can obviously see that when they go to score the 3rd and on.
I don't know what fight everyone watched but I didn't see this as anything close to a robbery. Jones absolutely won the fight, and won by a clear margin. I gave him every round except maybe the 3rd or 4th (cant remember). He was out-striking and landing most of the meaningful shots all night. Those leg kicks and elbows were the highlights of the fight. He hurt Gustaffson badly a couple of times and Gustaffson looked like he was about to keel over from exhaustion in the 5th round. It was a good competitive fight and Gustaffson gave Jones a tougher fight then he's used to for sure, and had some good success with his boxing. But he was still getting out-striked and beaten for the most part. I just don't know how anyone could say this was a robbery, and I'm the farthest thing from a jones fan.
As time goes on people will see it more and more as a less controversial decision. Gus was such an underdog and we are so used to seeing Jones completely dominate the fact Gus made it competitive felt like he was winning rounds decisively when in fact he was probably losing them marginally if viewed without emotion (as judges are supposed to). All the rounds were pretty close but Jones deserved the win overall.
Props to Gustaf for putting up a competitive fight but Jones won that fight clearly. Jones showed he is the champ by pushing for the fight the entire 5 rounds. He was able to find a way to overcome the biggest adversity in his ufc career so far.
If the round is close, it goes to the champ. Like a tie goes to the runner. But the round doesnt have to be even, just really close, and more often than not, the champ gets the benefit of the doubt.
I thought rounds 1 and 3 clearly went to Gustaffson. I think Jones clearly took rounds 4 and 5. That leaves the 2nd round, which was rather close. I gave it to Jones.
