Sorry Jose, I believe I misunderstood Merchants statements during the Quartey fight. I guess it was majah wajah. Here is a blurb from an interview about him concerning a fight with De la Hoya I believe. He's had some problems with marajuana, which cost him his WBO title, and cost him some stature. I think that the risk / reward for Oscar to fight Lopez right now is not such that you're going to see that fight. Because it's incredibly high risk, and the public doesn't know enough about Lopez to be demanding the fight. Lopez needs some more exposure.
That has NOTHING to do with it. Styles make fights. Mayorga had the style to bother Forrest. But Mayorga's style pretty much plays right into Lopez's hands. I take it you've never seen Lopez's dismantling of Campas. ****... I think ANYBODY who picks Mayorga here never saw Lopez's fight with Campas. And this wasnt the journeyman campas of today. Yory Boy was in his prime, and had only lost to Tito. Lopez beat him up worse, and more one sidely than Tito, Vargas, DLH, Carr, or Santos did. He even knocked Campas DOWN, something none of those other guys did either. He was also the first to drop Quartey, at a time when Quartey was considered having the best chin in boxing. Lopez was a sick puncher. Behind Tito, Lopez was the biggest puncher 147 has seen in the last 15 years. He'd find Mayorga a very easy target, and Mayorga simply couldnt take Lopez's power shots all night. I think a prime Lopez would TKO that cheating fraud Margarita also, but I'm probably in the minority there.
Jose Luis Lopez looked like he had devastating punches and could you imagine if he had Duran's killer instinct and a Shane Mosley's work ethic?
Amazing post. In Campas' now 20 year career I believe Lopez is the only guy to floor him. Remember the final shots from Trinidad in the Campas fight? Campas was nearly ****ing decapitated and didn't go down. That was Trinidad's absolute best punch. Campas has also broken his hand, had a busted nose and not gone down. He's not someone that was easy to get off his feet. More like impossible. Best part is that it took Lopez five years or so to grow into a consistent WW, and he was one of the most dangerous bangers in that division in decades. I wonder if he could hit at 119, which he fought at 7 or 7 times. Or at lightweight?
