Not high on either, but Buatsi is the more unknown commodity. We know Smith's level and it's not very high at all. I remember watching him against that Swedish guy Skoglund or something and it was reasonably competitive. I thought to myself then that this guy isn't all he's cracked up to be and a shot Groves is still his best win all these years later, must be about 7 year. Buatsi is nothing special but he will surely beat Smith
I remember Smith fought a Dutch guy (Holkzen or something?) who was a late replacement for the WBSS semi final and had about 3 days notice. The Dutch fella was actually a kickboxer who'd only had a few boxing fights and he gave Smith a good fight. Hurt him a few times. Smith had by far the easiest run of any WBSS winner. 1 European level fighter, a kickboxer and a shot Groves with one shoulder.
All true. Groves looked shot to bits against Smith a bit similar to how Degale was shot to bits against Eubank. Both absolute shells. I can't remember why he was that bad. I know his shoulder was dislocated against Eubank in the final round. Trouble making weight maybe as well, can't mind. Smith has dined out on that win for his whole career with the whole boxing world referring to him as world class. For me it's bizarre because he beat George Groves who was shot and Rocky Fielding who was **** also
It's strange how haters try to mock and belittle Callum Smiths' win over Groves. Forgetting that Groves was in the form of his career under Mcguigan, was a current reigning world champion who'd got to the final of the super series tournament, who'd just beaten Chris Eubank jr and Fedor Chudinov., and was only 30 years old. I'm pretty sure Groves was the favourite going into the fight with the bookies! I know apparently Groves had some injury or something (don't they all after a loss), but truthfully you should still be able to admit it was at least a good win ffs. Trolls talk like he was facing a 45 year old Groves who'd not fought for 5 years or something
He dislocated his shoulder against Eubank and was at risk of getting replaced in the WBSS final if he couldn't fight by a certain date.
Lol behave The George Groves that entered the ring that night was pinned together. His shoulder was ****ed and he looked like a bag of **** at the weigh in. His camp revolved around shoulder rehab and having to rush to be fit for the tournament date as the organisers wouldn’t push it back any further.
This is such an interesting fight When Smith looks good he looks devastating, but he comes in short against anyone who can put it on him and dictate things. At 175 he is a terrifying puncher if he can land. But he's never done so at 175 Buatsi has always been too cautious, even though he has the look of a destroyer when he attacks opponents who are there for the taking.
I can't recall anybody talking about this before the fight, it was all afterwards.. You'd think the bookmakers would have got the memo, Groves was the favourite. Look on the sky sports website. 'Groves vs Smith Who Wins the World Super Series Final? There's a poll and the fans votes for Groves, too. Anyway, regardless it'd be nice if people at least praised Smiths performance that night. He was on fire and on his best form. I honestly think the Smith of that night would have done that to any version of Groves.
I agree, I've never been high on Smith either, but he's still operated at a higher level than Buatsi.
It's much of a muchness Buatsi started in 2017 Smith in 2012. Smith has been in with Alvarez and Beterbiev both times couldn't land a single punch and 'fought' like an absolute coward against Alvarez. He's been in the ring with higher level boxers but that doesn't mean he's operated at that level as operate suggests he has been competitive at that level. He was blown out twice and he also lost to John Ryder
Well Smith won and Buatsi only avoided being stopped because his punch resistance is pretty good having never having been in a competitive fight his entire career. Buatsi showed great heart in there as he was out in his feet at least 3 times including in the last minute. Meanwhile Smith proved his doubters wrong who can surely now no longer claim he is just British level or mediocre.
easily the fight of the year so far for me. i wont go into the specifics of the fight, we all saw it. the only caveat i hope Buatsi takes, while watching it back, is how ****ing ****, Virgil Hunter was in the corner. he needs to bin that idiot off, screaming at him that he was 5 rounds down after the 5th, absolutely no technical information what so ever, he was only short of pulling out the Teddy Atlas "be a fireman" speech. Contrast that to Buddy Mcgirt who was giving out technical advice from round 1, and then when the time was right, he gave a rousing speech to his fighter. ....now thats excellent corner work....
