A lot of the critics and fans are not giving this boxer much of a chance against the current P4P king Manny Pacquiao, and it might be with good reason, but it's not a reason to avoid this fight. A fight like this isn't an explosion of interest for the casual boxng fan, but it should mean more than it does to most of us more hardcore boxing fans. Joshua Clottey has a familiar story in the world of boxing. He was a poor boy growing up in an impoverished nation, much like his opponent for this fight. He took up boxing at a young age and found his way to the united states and to the cusp of boxing fame. A series of close decisions, unreasonable stoppages and very solid outings in spite of disappointments have placed him into the collective consciousness of a lot of boxing fans, but not on the tips of our tongues or in our dream match up lists. I think this is a disservice to a hard working and very talented fighter who remains an opponent to the elite without breaking into their ranks. Most of what we know as fans about this man comes through a select bit of media and the fights which we have watched. We have seen this man battle Antonio Margarito with broken hands, we have witnessed him on the brink of a Madison Square Garden win over Miguel Cotto. We have seen him outbox and outland Zab Judah and get a victory over Carlos Baldomir snatched away from him unfairly. With the HBO decision to start introducing us to these boxers as people who fight, we can now see Joshua Clottey as the type of fighter we didn't know he was. A humble, intelligent and respectful fighter. These are the men who elevate the sport and remind us that we're watching people in there. So I say to you boxing fans who find yourselves disappointed by the failure of Pacquiao and Mayweather, don't hold this against Pacquiao or Arum. Don't look at Clottey is a 2nd rate fill in, look at this fight for what it is. It's a P4P king vs an underdog with talent. This is Clottey's biggest moment in his career. We who support the boxing community and want boxing to be as big and as bad as it ever was need to support the Clotteys out there. We owe it to Joshua Clottey to watch him take on the biggest challenge of his life and maybe, just maybe, we will witness what none of us expected. A dream come true for fighter who has been getting the short end of the stick. If you can't find a reason to get excited for this fight, then you should do some leg work and find out exactly who Manny Pacquiao is fighting on March 13th. You might be happy with what you see.
Great post. I wish more people saw it this way. Clottey's been hovering in the boxing scene like a submarine. Dangerous, but not widely noticed. Hopefully after this fight, despite the outcome, he will get more recognition as an elite welterweight. Personally I can't see no more than 2 or 3 boxers at welterweight today that could beat Clottey. I"ll be rooting for Pacquiao, but Clottey should get all the respect from everyone.
Clottey seems like a great guy. IMO, I can't see him beating Pac in any way, shape, or form. He'll probably outweigh Pac by 15-20 lbs on fight night and that might help him last the distance. But the guy has 1 KO win in his last 11 fights since August 2004. I think Clottey is a great fighter, never been truly beaten badly. It's just that Manny is on a different level. If Manny were to lose to someone today, it won't be to Clottey.
this is a very exciting fight and dangerous opponent, even if Pac knocks him out the fight is a worthy fight to be made.
Haven't read the post bc I'm in class, but intend to bc I'm a fan of Clottey's, but I will say that you ought be rooting for Pac in this one, bc if he loses it deflates considerably the Pac May baloon.
Clottey has been given chance after chance, we know his story by now. That being said this is definitely a fight I will be watching. Clottey is not in Pac's league but he sure is a solid opponent that can put up a fight when his back is against the wall. By the way anyone who lives in the UK, they showing it free on sky sports 2 at 2am.
Clottey is a quality opponent. Any true boxing fan can see that and therefore appreciate the matchup. It's not Pac - Mayweather, but it's not bad.
Clottey has had a rough ride. Loosing to a clearly inferior opponent in Marg, on account of a broken hand... I was gonna say smth about Cotto, but he actually has only himself to blame there (provided his leg wasn't really hurt).
If Void would have signed the contract, Pac would be fighting him, not Clottey. Void was his first choice. Roach tried to get Void to fight Pac right after Pac stopped Hatton in the second round, but Void refused.
