Pretty much this. I think he’s also been advised badly the last few years and Matchroom are to blame for that. Letting egomaniacs make decisions for him, whatever they try to spin the public, everyone knows he had chances to box the best and declined time and time again. Just go away mate and shine your highly undeserved Olympic gold medal because at least you’ve got that, which was gift wrapped anyway.
Prior to 2020 yes Joshua had the bigger brand, in 2023 it’s not even close. Win lose or draw Fury has the respect of his peers and most boxing fans, the same can’t be said about Joshua unfortunately. Right now it feels like Joshua wants to become a corporate figure rather than a fighter, if so fair play to him, but a fighting man he isn’t. He doesn’t even exude that energy anymore, so not sure of what has happened to him. He’s still top 5 but if he fights for another vacant belt or someone other then an existing champion for a strap he’ll br remembered as a paper champion like Tommy “the machine” Gun.
Agree with this it was ridiculous money, however clearly he isn’t very bright as he took a different route for way less and lost decisively three times to someone else.
Fury is way ahead these days. Boxing aside he has Netflix shows, ITV shows, books, plenty of merchandise, a brother constantly in the limelight, his dad kicking off on camera at every opportunity and a missus on daytime TV shows. All of which comes back to Tyson. It’s not even close anymore.
None of them are ‘fighting men’ - including AJ. All any of them care about is the $$. I do agree with the premise of your post though. Post Sky, AJ is no longer a commercial juggernaut. Fury is the bigger star now in my opinion. But he is not some superstar either from a PPV point of view. He just is a bigger star than AJ. And a better fighter.
Bellew is a poor man's @DramaShow when it comes to Anthony Joshua, the new Derek Chisora. Amazed that people thought he was very good in the first place and astonished that there are some fools around who still believe that he is a great. Joshua is a modern day Herbie Hide at best but Danny Williams would be a fair comparison in boxing terms. Hearn done a number on the public and they must be pissing themselves how easy it is to fleece people.
