I got a ? if someone can answer who wins a prime Morales or PBF at 122 or 126 or 130 but a prime Morales not the one who fought raheem he was done by that time
Juan Diaz has not been seriously tested, and he has fought some good contenders/former world champions. That proves he is elite right there. I think he would even beat a Prime Casa, Pac, Freitas, Witter, Paulie, David Diaz easily, and would be 50/50 with a peak Corrales. A slight underdog against a prime Castillo. Diaz would lose to Hatton, and Mayweather. Remember though he is only 24 years old he might have 3-4 more years of improving as a champion before he peaks. That is a scary thought.
He has crept into a fair few peoples top ten fighters p4p. I am just asking the question. In comparison to fighters in the division within the past 5-10 years, can he be competitive.
I noticed that I am one of the only people here that thinks he can beat Hatton. Here is my thoughts. Better, longer jab. Still very strong for 140. Better combination puncher then Hatton. Better defense then Hatton. Both have quick hands inside. Both have a great work rate. I think DIaz is the more well rounded boxer however.
Sues2nd, I noticed you had Diaz beating most people. Obviously a fighter you rate quite highly. Care to tell where you see Diaz going from here, considering his young age?
I'd give him David Diaz and maybe Witter. Other than that I couldn't see him having an easy time with any of those guys. Definitely not a prime Corrales Castillo Mayweather Pacquiao and Paulie.
Against the fighters named, the ones I picked, either his style is perfect for them or he is just on another level. Mayweather - No way does Diaz beat him. He is too fast and too good. I could go into EXACTLY why, but I dont think we really even need to. Freitas - I just dont see it being THAT much different from when they fought. A prime Freitas was at his best when applying pressure....so is Diaz, only Diaz has a higher workrate and better defense. Juan is also the smarter fighter as well. His ring intelligence is off the charts. Watch how well round to round he makes nessesary adjustments....he shouldnt be that good at it at that age. Casa - Tho I think Casa's style is suited to give Diaz a great fight, I think he would be too cautious and too content on setting the pace or keeping it. Diaz would be all over him. This fight would in all likelyhood take place on the inside, and that aint Casa's strength. Corrales - NO WAY NO HOW! Corrales had the outside fighting style to absolutely keep Diaz out of his comfort zone....ESPECIALLY when you count in his power. JLC - I selected him by accident...and once you select it, theres no turning back. I think Diaz would get beat up bad on the inside. This is a bad matchup for him. Paulie - PM needs to keep a fight at a distance to be successful. With Diaz's relentless style and workrate, that wouldnt happen. Hatton - Too big, too good, too strong. Diaz gets beat in this one. David Diaz - Juan is on another level. Out of everyone here, this is the biggest mismatch. Pacman - This one has been beaten to death on this site, but I think Diaz's whole style is wrong for Pac. Not to mention Diaz being the naturally bigger and stronger fighter. Witter - Witter doesnt handle pressure and high output fighters well. Diaz is just that. I think this fight is a pickem, but I think the style matchup goes to Juan slightly...hense why I picked him. I dont quite have Diaz in the top ten p4p yet...but lets just say he is close.
Fair enough. A couple of the closer fights i disagree with, but I can see your logic, and there are some which could quite easily IMO go either way.
Juan Diaz isn't overrated. I'm surprised that he isn't hyped like Pavlik. They both have fan friendly styles and large fan bases, but people hype Pavlik (who isn't half as good as Diaz) up like crazy and don't really hype Juan Diaz that much. It's probably because of the Taylor knockout. A MW version of Juan Diaz would destroy Taylor even easier than Pavlik and definitely wouldn't get hurt by him. Out of that list, Diaz would beat Corrales, David Diaz, Pac, and have a very good chance of beating prime Freitas, Castillo, and Malignaggi. I'm not sure about Hatton right now, but I could see Diaz beating Hatton in a year or so when he moves up to 140, when Ricky is going to be more of a faded fighter.
I think Casamayor in his prime had the power and the slickness to keep Diaz off him, I think he would be one to outbox him. I think you overrate Corrales if you believe his style is an outside one that would keep Diaz at bay. Corrales was a brawler, through and through. Diaz would be all over him. I think Corrales's power could be a worry for Juan, and as the style matchups go "a puncher beats a swarmer", but I think Diaz has the style to overwhelm Corrales, who was quite a limited fighter. I chose JLC as well, but I don't think Juan gets beat up bad on the inside, I just think Castillo is a bit too technical, and has the ability to neutralize Diaz's attack. I think Corrales could beat him though.
I think after watching the Frietas fight, Juan will have trouble against coutner punchers with decent movement. Hence picking Casa, Mayweather ect to beat him. Against Malignaggi and Witter, both have great movement, but I'm not sold on how well they fight from the inside. If Juan can get inside effectively he can definitely beat them. At this early stage of his career, i'm not sure if he could take the power of either Castillo or Corrales. He could definitely out work them thats for sure. The Katsidis match should be a good test for Juans chin, if nothing else.
Corrales' style and POWER would keep him at bay....not just his outside fighting. Corrales was definately more of a brawler, but was also a fantastic boxer. People remember him more for his wars, but his technique and pure boxing talent were phenominal...but because of his greatness in fights where he literally left everything in the ring, he is more remembered as that....a brawler. His reach and power would keep Diaz at bay and weary of coming in.
I see your point on Casa...I dont think that fight would be a walkover for Juan, just one I favor him in. The "all over him" comment was more on how Diaz would have to fight him to win, as opposed to hinting at an easy win. As for a Katsidis matchup, Im still fuming that it didnt happen. Not that Katsidis would win, but it would have been fun as hell while it lasted. See the problem with Katsidis is, he cuts too easily...and a fighter like Diaz, that has a tremendous output, along with the fact that he attacks from just about every angle...Katsidis would be bleading like a pig early. This fight would be stopped on cuts.... But again, I would have LOVED to see it happen. Because damn would that matchup be exciting.
I think he would give everyone on this list hell, excluding Mayweather at 135. I stopped short of including Corrales and Castillo on the list of opponents he would beat, just because I think we would have to see Juan tested a little bit more against the best before we make a judgment about that. I also left Junior Witter off the list, because I am of the opinion that it might be the worst style matchup for Diaz on this list. Not saying that Juan couldn't beat him, though.
