Which fighters were as good or better than JMM at countering? Where does he rank among the top 10 counter punchers of all-time? This content is protected
Amazing. You could clearly understand what the guy was pointing out, stuff life Marquez making Manny reach by stepping back and countering with an amzing combo, no-brainer. Not that I have much of a brain, but still, the sweet science at it`s best.
Anything to do with Marquez, I'm all over it like pigeons on a chip. Not easy to be such a great counter puncher when you're not actually a particularly defensive fighter, as Marquez wasn't. He was definitely one of the leading practitioners of the aggressive counter-punching style. What I love about Marquez is that he has that everyman quality about him. He scored reasonably well in most areas, but ultimately he wasn't the most athletic, nor the fastest, nor the hardest hitting, nor the physically strongest. But he was just so canny and intelligent as a fighter, he was able to pool the resources he had and make himself such a consistent performer at the highest level. I also loved the fact that, while he was a stylist first and foremost, he also had a ruthless streak and was a great finisher when he had someone hurt. He was clinical when he needed to be and very rarely let anyone off the hook. As brave as they come, too. My only regret is that the record books don't show him getting the better of his series with Pacquiao, as I firmly believe he did. 1-2-1 against a bona fide all-time great in Pacquiao is a more than respectable achievement in its own right and most fighters in history would snap your hand off for that, but in my eyes Marquez will always be at least 2-1-1 against Manny, maybe even 3-1. One of the great rivalries of all time, and I genuinely think if they had fought another ten times there'd never be dull fight between them. Something special about how their styles gelled to make it a great watch every time. Man, I guess I'm really missing Marquez!
He’s my favorite fighter of my lifetime bar none. Had the privilege of seeing I’m live 11 times including that KO and from ringside at his last fight which was on my birthday weekend right where I live. He was a master counter puncher. Marquez took his craft seriously and had a great teacher. He always stayed in shape and honed his skills and had tremendous patience. His mind never stopped evolving from a technique standpoint which is how you’ll notice even in his late 30s his combination selections got even more varied. He’s one of those rare fighters who can expertly counterpunch in combination. He threw feints well and judged distance and timing like few. He saw patterns and he set the traps and that is art. I miss watching him and anticipating his fights. He was a great fighter and s pleasure to root for and pay to travel and see.
Silly question...but do you think the whole “drinking your own urine “thing turned fans against him ?
No, I don’t think so. I thought that was a gimmick but I had the chance to ask him and he really did do that for a few fights.
