If you watched any of ayala's fights you could see that he was not a fighter to just go charging at his opponents. He was a disciplined fighter, one who was multi-dimensional. He could box (something that jackson could not do)as well as punch like hell, and he was patient in his attack. Also, anyone can get hurt if they're hit right. This happened to most of the all time greats so it should be no surprise that it happened to ayala. And yet, he recovered and scored the ko, so you gotta give him that much credit because it showed he had heart. Many fighters have started out as terrors, knocking out foe after foe but the first time they got clobbered good they didn't recover and their careers went down the toilet. I don't like ayala at all, i think he's as rotten as they get but outside of the ring and inside of it is two different things.
Jackson could box..Its a fallacy to say he couldnt. He was a textbook fighter, who just fell in love with his power a bit to much. I couldnt definitively say Ayala was a better schooled boxer than Jackson..especially seeing Julian displayed his skills against a much higher class of opposition.
Textbook boxer? I think you must be talking about the wrong fighter. No textbook boxer gets hit as much as he did. Boxing is not just about hiiting but it's also about defense, of which jackson had almost none.
You're joking, right? I saw a lot of Ayala and a lot Jackson. Ayala's power was not in the same league, but then whose was?
I truly struggle to see how you come to that conclusion if you have seen a decent catalogue of Jackson fights. Whilst he is known mostly for his power, he had a decent skill set. As good as any elite level fighter who is known as good but not great in this regard. Its not as though im saying he set the world on fire with his technical ability but to say he had no defense and couldnt box is way off the mark I reckon.
Tony Ayala may be the mosy overrated fighter in history. Its always "he would have fought Hagler, Hearns, etc." BS. His next scheduled fight was to be against Roberto Duran. Duran would have mugged his ass and pretty much ended his career. The guy was a front runner and a punk.
