I voted for Chavez but Pea won the fight. I remember watching this fight as a kid and being happy JC got the draw

People seemS to forget how big this fight was at that time. It could have easily been billed THE FIGHT OF THE DECADE or even FIGHT OF THE CENTURY.

Chavez was already considered an ATG at that time, with a record of 87-0. Withaker was concensus P4P #1.

Both were at the prime of their careers.

The result was a letdown though, it was not competitive and boring.

It was like DLH-Tito in many ways.

I was a big Chavez fan at the time and still am, but there's no way I can more than four rounds to give Julio. I usually wind up with a 116-112 score whenever I do this fight. Although I do have to agree with an earlier opinion that Chavez may have deserved the first two rounds or so, but from there on Whitaker really dominated this fight.

It was only a letdown because Whitaker made it boring, which he needed to do to win.

Which is why years from now people will remember JCC, and only boxing fans will remember Whitaker.

Pernell Whitaker put on a masterful display of boxing to tame the onrushing Chavez. Sweat Pea was clearly robbed of the decision.

Yes. I've judged 10 fights on ESB now w/ controversial decisions...This is the only fight in which a CLEAR ROBBERY happened.

Whitaker had 8 rounds IN THE BAG...And people who've been following my scoring know that I don't say a round is won "clearly" unless it is clear.

Also, I should note that I had DLH beating whitaker in their fight rather clearly...So I'm not much of a whitaker fan I guess.

There were 4 close rounds on my card. The rest of the rounds were clearly whitakers.

Nice work. I can't remember exactly but I think I scored it very similarly. People run this fight down by saying they were both past-prime etc, but I thought it was another Whitaker masterclass, he was simply superb.
