I agree, Besides Kelson Pinto and a couple of his earlier fights, he doesn't knock anybody out with one punch. I think his power is a bit overrated. He can bang, and his punches look brutal, but he is not like a little Tyson in there. Even Zab Judah who doesn't have the greatest chin, ate alot of Clean punches to the chin without being wobbled until the end when all those punches took their toll. I do think Miguel Cotto is a slightly small welterweight and that is probably why he is not a truck hitting puncher although he is pretty dangerous because has alot of TKO/KO wins on his resume and like Lampley says, he doesn't just beat you, he beats you up. Accumulation punches.
Dude i don't have to watch the fight again I've seen it 3 times. And you're talking about how his feet are planted so they were obviously powerful. That is just nonsense. Have you ever thrown a punch? I agree cotto was trying to hit him with hard shots but they weren't nearly as hard as cotto has thrown in previous fights, because when you move forward in a fight (on the offense) your punches will automatically have more effect.
We'll agree to disagree, because neither you or I were taking those shots. Put it this way, irrespective of how hard Cotto threw his shots in prior engagements, I think Margarito's punch resistance on the night was unusual.
Imo Cotto's problem was that he gave ground even when he had the upper hand. In inside exchanges for instance the upper hand would got to Cotto but then Cotto would back off and give ground, this happened repeatedly. Cotto would counter and move away from the corner and after countering hard where Margo looked stunned Cotto would just walk away. I've seen this fight over and over and always view it as Cotto just did not believe in himself. He was master of the inside exchanges early on but did not believe it. By the end of the fight Cotto just wants to be away.
Have to agree with you Selfkill, this fight was a Classic, I'll be telling my Grandchildren about this Its nice to see such a hugely anticipated fight live up to all the hype. Cotto Margarito ll in 2009 please.
Who the hell says this fight is overrated? atsch It's a modern classic. But that being said, IMO Marquez-Vazquez III deserves FOTY :hey
I haven't seen this fight since it happened. Maybe my memory is fuzzy, but did Cotto not go to the body as much? Would it have made a difference in slowing Tony down?
Ever stop to think that Cotto could'nt match punch for punch, mano a mano with Margarito, and he figured his best chance was to box and move? Had Cotto tried to go punch for punch, strenghth for strenghth against Margarito, and gotten rolled over.......you'd be saying how stupid it was for Margarito to brawl with him, when he (Cotto) was the better boxer.
There is little doubt in my mind that this was a battle of the titans. Both titans gave it everything they had, but the titan who had the most won the battle.
That was a war. I have not seen anything like that in a while. Cotto landed brutal shots early on. In fact I think he was looking for the home run a bit to much. The power he put into those shots had to have worn him down, along with Margs constant pressure and work. Straight grade A fight in my book, by both men. I said it before the fight and still believe that if Cotto boxes instead of trying to slug he wins the fight.
