Just to play devil's advocate, was Don King really this evil garbage?

Jack Newfeld must be a very wealthy man. So far he's had to pay off the FBI, the police and the mob to make up accusations against Don King. Lucky guy.

Yeah, to quote the police officer in it. I wasn't quoting Jack Newfeld.

Nobody asks. (Everyone just recites the same couple names posted in this thread and say he's a thief.). Everyone hears the same handful of stories. But when they do ask random fighters who fought for him, people speak up.

This is old back when HBO was still televising but was headed out the door.

Bob Arum, Don King, Emanuel Steward eating at a steakhouse with various people. Interesting conversation with guys just talking about boxing.

It's quite funny actually that people are even talking about How much of a monster Don King was .... This type of management had been going on since the beginning of time .... If you want to be the nice guy and try and not maximize your own profit ... well then you wouldn't be the "business" part of the sport and probably wouldn't last long...... You people seriously think that Don King was the first shrewd Manager/Promotor in this business? please .... You dont even have to go back that far to ask much LaRosa was taking from Pryor's purse .... AND at least we got to see some of the best cards ever with King... certainty better than today's boxing .. no?

Richard Hall on knocking out Michael Nunn in sparring, meeting Don King, and being in camp with all King's fighters in the 90s. (Also references how King didn't respect people who didn't respect money.)

It might start at the end but play it from the beginning. It's interesting.

I'm not saying you are wrong, but I thought the drugs were thyroid pills. And the license issue was because of the beating he took at the hands of Larry Holmes...

But maybe that was just fodder for the press to print it?

    Because McCallum couldn’t draw flies.

McCallum vs. Mannion went to purse bids because no one wanted to promote it. Arum picked it up for $70K … and probably lost money on it at that.

Being good doesn’t make one a draw. Promoters aren’t going to shell out major money for someone no network is terribly keen to show, who can’t put butts in seats and who isn’t marketable.

If someone thought they could make money on McCallum, they’d have put in a higher bid.

Great fighter but a terrible investment.

ya i know McCallum couldn't draw flies, but he got paid **** many many times ,, ... .. off memory I wouldn't say the McGirt Simon Brown fight was a stop the world must see fight ... and I think McGirt got paid more as the challenger than Mike ever did in his entire career for a fight ... off memory

Good post. KIng ripped off fighters with one hand but gave with the other. Was he any better or worse than a lot of other promoterfs, though?
