You are right. But Shane and Margs have been down in fights before, and Cotto never came close to putting either man down. Forrest and Perez were not considered bangers, but they had better technique than Cotto only because they could punch whether hard or not with both hands. Cotto has no right hand and that is why I don't think he is powerful as some like to think.
You could tell by the way that people picked the outcome of this fight that they really had no real understanding of the natural law and gravity of the situation. I keep hearing this ^, presumably from people who picked Cotto.. Understand something, EVERYONE gives Margarito a "boxing lesson" the first few rounds (if that's what you'd like to call it). Cotto is no better than virtually any Margarito opponent who has gone more than half a fight with him in that sense. Understand something else (and people will probably realize this in a rematch), Margarito started out incredibly slow in this fight, and fought very poorly by Margarito standards overall. Hopefully Cotto himself, or anybody picking him in the rematch, doesn't make the mistake of making generic assumptions (AGAIN) about what to expect, and the potential outcome. Cotto had it EASY in the first fight, all things considered. Margarito didn't catch up to Cotto but a few times, and it was like a bear mauling when it happened. Cotto is going to have to dramatically increase his punch resistance and overall mental and physical toughness to have any sort of chance whatsoever. I believe Cotto will fight a better fight, and be a better fighter because of this loss overall - but I fully expect Margarito to fight a better fight as well, and that will be very bad news for Cotto if that happens.
I've seen fights where guys came back and beat a monster simply by changing their game plans. Cotto won rounds against A.M, so he can win. He will have to discipline himself, and not let A.M affect his game plan by letting A.M enforce his will on him. Holyfield came back to beat Bowe in a razor close fight. Cotto can win. I don't think he will, but I won't be surprised if he does.
Shane was down LONG ago against Forrest and in the rematch that wasn't even close to happen, same with Margarito who was dropped LONG ago and was only seriously hurt for a few seconds against Santos at 154. If you remember the questions surrounding Cotto vs Mosley when it was officially on and announced, it was "Will Cotto be the first man to stop Mosley or at least be the second man to seriously hurt him/drop him?". Why were such questions all over?, it's obvious because of Cotto's punching power which he has already proven. The man can hit REALLY hard when he commits to his punches and with Margarito's poor defense he was wide open for whatever positioning Cotto was looking to unload and he did but failed to gain Margarito's attention simply because Margarito deserves the credit here for his ability to take it. In cases like this boxing fans tend to complicate things when in reality credit should be given for the fighters that were able to prove the majority wrong and TAKE it rather than claim the other guy can't punch hard enough all of a sudden.
:good I have to say you are becoming one of my favorite fight analyzers. Very rational and precise breakdowns
:goodDo you mean the looping uppercut to his solar-plexus that made Cotto's legs dip and fall against the ropes, near the end of the round?:? I thought i was the only one who noticed that,as i never heard anybody else comment on it.
The Clottey-A.M fight was closer than what people thought. I just watched the fight again, and had a draw. A.M couldn't not land clean on Clottey at all. AM won on hustle points. I don't think Cotto can beat Clottey, A.M or Williams. Clottey beat A.M up real good only to be given a sorry decision on terrible scoring. On one card they had AM winningby like 10 or 11 points lol...People say A.M beat Clottey, and that if A.M started faster against Williams then or in the rematch he would've won or he will win. I look at this math from their point of view, and then I see how bad Clottey busted A.M's lip, jaw, ear and eye, and Williams looked a bit busted up against A.M and Clottey didn't have a scratch on him, I go hmmmmmmmmmm...lol.
Maybe you are missing MY point. It doesn't matter how long ago they were down in a fight, they were down. I know both Shane and AM take a great shot. A.M took some good shots against Cotto, but A.M also rolled with a lot of the shots, and showed his good defense in that fight. We all know about the pre-fight talk. Cotto was able to run over guys he could back up. He could not even come close to hurting AM. Why? Yeah, those guys take great shots, but if Cotto is so powerful, why did he not even visibly hurt Shane or AM when guys who might say Cotto hits harder than were able to put him down. I'm not sold on Cotto's power, sorry. He isn't a powerful puncher. Shane and Forrest do take great shots, but Cotto isn't a powerful puncher. Vivian Harris knocked Urkal out where Cotto could not put a dent in Urkal.
