I especially loved the outrage from Povetkin's fans over the "slave clause" of having to finance his own travel costs and accommodation costs plus his own health insurance. Well duh!! He gets a $2 million Dollar guaranteed payday, he better source his own travel arrangements and insurance. What else does he want to get for free?

Seriously, judging how Povetkin was allegedly whining about these costs (according to Sauerland, not sure how trustworthy they are) ... if Povektin wouldn't be boxing he'd be a ****ing homeless bum whining and crying about how he can't afford insurance and transportation on his unemployment benefits and how the whole capitalist system is stacked against him.

Read the following, paying particular attention to the last paragraph. Then go home:

Povetkin's promoters Sauerland Event called the bout agreement received from Klitschko a "slave contract." Povetkin's manager sent some of the details to Russian boxing journalist Alexander Pavlov. Pavlov detailed some of the items that caused friction between Sauerland and Klitschko.

    1. Povetkin has to visit (maybe more than one) joint or separate press conferences, participate in press trips, interviews, open training sessions and other public events as prescribed by K2 Promotions [Klitschkos' promotional company].

    2. If Povetkin does not appear on one of the press events organized by K2, K2 will fine him the amount of at least $250,000 dollars.

    3. K2 refuses to pay for relocation expenses, hotel accommodations, meals and transportation to and from the fight location, etc.

    4. K2 refuses to provide health insurance for the duration of the fight and commits Povetkin to bear all of the costs of all medical expenses in treating injuries that he may receive in the fight.

    5. Povetkin has to use the gloves provided by K2, from the company Grant. Povetkin is not allowed to bring his own gloves even in an unopened package or use gloves by any company other than Grant.

    — Kalle Sauerland of Sauerland Event told Sportal.de the contract was very unfair because K2 did not draft the agreement under the common form of a "mandatory defense" and instead plugged in their own terms as if the fight was made without a purse bid being involved.

"We will not allow Klitschko to dictate their terms to us. We understand that the contract should be signed, according to clear rules, which are drawn up with agreement based on a mandatory defense of title. Klitschko, however, completely ignored these common rules, and we received a document of 26 pages, which can only be described as a slave contract."

    :hi:

Edit: I see Boxingfan posted this up already.....still, it's worth reading twice for all the deluded people who keep saying 'all you need to do is become the mando and everything will be hunky-dory' etc

James Toney stands in silence after defeating John Ruiz by unanimous decision © AFP
Over the weekend James "Lights-Out" Toney, in a somewhat explicit manner, told Boxingtalk.com that he is not pleased with and will not be accepting the $1.5M or "chump change" on the table for him to challenge IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko at Madison Square Garden on November 11.

Lmao @ 1.5 million is cheap to him. When has he got more then 1.5 million in the heavyweight division? Matter of fact what he done really in the heavyweight division besides using steriods to beat Ruiz? And is the same Toney that he's willing to fight Wlad for free? lol. Come on boxingfan1. You can do better then that.

They could easily use this to their own advantage though. They could literally call a press conference anywhere in the world, at any time they chose and, if he didn't turn up, fine him. That's too much control.

What usually happens is both sides agree when there'll be press conferences and so forth, which gives you a fair outcome. Whilst the Klitschko's demands aren't always excessive, they could use them to their advantages. An unfair advantage.

$1.5m doesn't seem like a lot, considering how big the fight would be.

The key though is the percentages. Toney would probably be getting under 20%, if he accepted $1.5m, so even though it's still a lot of money and a good payday, he would have deserved more.

Fact is at the time it would have been shown in the U.S. He had just drawn with Rahman for the WBC title so the amount of interest would have been big.

Also your "what has he done" point means nothing. Toney was a name, sure he made it at the lower weights but a name who would draw $$ none the less.

Let's say the total $ for the fight would have been $10 million plus.
That means Toney's cut would have been 15%, at $15 million it's 10%. Now maybe you think that's fair, I don't, and I can see why Toney declined.

Just curious, anyone know what he earned for the Rahman fight?

$2.8m. Almost double what Klitschko offered.

i agree with you there, but i don't see K2 making random conference calls just to score 250k, plus we don't know if that 20 some page contract had predetermined dates for the pressers already layed out

You mean he got a gift draw vs Rahman? Maybe if Toney would have defeated Rahman and didn't use steriods to easily beat Ruiz then the 1.5 million dollars offer is a chump change. Toney is a name but he ain't close to a draw.

$2.8 million says otherwise, $1.5 million is chump change indeed.

as far as Vitali being added into some of the Haye and now Chisora contracts, I think the fact that we have two brothers, both being champion and self promoted makes it a rare and special occurrence

lets say a promoter had two heavies, both held a portion of the title, they are best friends who will not fight...ever

if the promoter was signing a fight for one of his heavies against another belt holder that had a rematch clause that would be normal

then it also stipulated that if the other belt holder won both matches he also had to fight the other heavy promoted by the same guy.....wouldn't we be happy to have unification fights somewhat back to back?

that promoter would be at the advantage, but why wouldn't he want to hold on to the biggest piece of the pie for as long as he could

"A rare and special occurrence"?? Who cares, this is K2 wanting to cover their arses, keep the belt inhouse, keep the cash flowing.

Straight rematch clause and that's it, all this "waaa waaa I'm going to set my brother on you" is bull****.

You got the source for that? If that's true then that's over pricing considering Toney hasn't dome jack **** to be fighting for the vacate wbc belt. And since he got a draw with Rahman and a no decision vs Ruiz cause of him using steriods, 1.5 million offer is a fair deal. Toney is not a draw at all. Hell i'll give you an example in the rematch vs Rahman the fight was shown on the best fox sports show lol. Come on.
