This deserves to be run back and given due appreciation. (it was overshadowed by Stevenson vs. Nakathila on ESPN, which literally everyone that watched regretted subjecting ourselves to, while this stupendous war aired concurrently but to little fanfare on various Latin American outlets including some countries' versions of ESPN2 and TVP Deportes in Argentina) I had been looking forward to seeing two young undefeated Mexicans go at it, but didn't realize the fight would line up exactly opposite the main event of Top Rank's card. Here then, is a spotlight on Traviesito/ aka The Bullterrier vs. El General, at last... Round 1 Cuéllar is snapping out a hard left jab on the forward march, keeping Arce at the tail-whip end of his long spindly reach. Cuéllar exploiting his 13cm height advantage (his is unlisted on BoxRec, but Karim being 5′ 2½″ puts Cuéllar at over 5'7", tall for bantam while Arce is on the slightly undersized side of the average range). Arce backing up, countering in two and three punch bursts on the backfoot, just reacting, with generalship clearly established by El General. 10-9 Cuéllar
Round 2 Cuéllar is slamming a straight right lead past Arce's measuring jab, and ducking in to rip body hooks but there getting cuffed upside the head by each of Arce's gloves sweeping in like pincers. Good sustained action inside until Cuéllar resets, feet planted and guard up, letting Arce circle out and take stock. A few jump-in flurries by Arce, with Cuéllar ducking and swaying laterally, then coming up with counters - neither planting anything very clean on the other's chin ...lots of shoulder deflections. 10-9 Cuéllar 20-18 Cuéllar
Round 3 Cuéllar grins as he walks Arce into the ropes, throwing big sweeping left hooks from a midline holster, resting the hand just above the waist between lobs. Arce is battling back furiously to escape the ropes and corners when maneuvered there, beaning Cuéllar with some persuasive overhand rights after pushing out a show jab. HUGE combination by Arce, shaking the sweat off Cuéllar's head with both an uppercut off the ropes and then quickly turning over a lacrosse stick right before fully retracting the arm. 10-9 Arce, just got through with the superior firepower in this one although Cuéllar is still applying heavy pressure and running him down. 29-28 Cuéllar
Round 4 Cuéllar is tilting halfway inside, core sucked in tight, guard up, juking and weaving in Arce's face, being grazed with some jabs and crosses on either temple, waiting, picking his spot - and then BOOM! Huge left upper-hook in the lungs puts Arce down. He's up like a basketball on a bounce pass from an elite point guard, but can't fully hide the wince from his expression. His uncle Jorge sitting ringside looks alarmed but not panicky. Cuéllar now extremely confident, spinning his fists in place as he roams in, arms spread wide, loading up on wide power shots. Arce is taking some leather and getitng pushed into the ropes but also finding the mark with stiff counter jabs and chopping rights on the brazen Cuéllar, not letting him swoop in for the finish so easily. 10-8 Cuéllar 39-36 Cuéllar
Round 5 Cuéllar is drowning Arce with long jabs on the outside and then initiating phonebooth slugfests by turns. Arce is just about holding his own but not getting the upper hand in either venue. Arce now takes a turn coming forward as Cuéllar lulls him with a period of restful coasting in reverse, sawing at the hairline of Arce with a few long jabs before springing a hard ambush right before hitting the corner. Arce flinches, maybe took a thumb in his eye, shaking it off and glancing at the ref quizzically as though expecting a break in the action or a caution on Cuéllar - but the ref gives him a count, sending Cuéllar to a neutral corner!?!? Wtf?? I guess the official interpreted Arce partially turning away from his opponent as something like taking a knee? Arce looks equal parts confused, mad, and humiliated. 10-8 Cuéllar 49-44 Cuéllar
Round 6 Cuéllar gets damn near gored into the corner by Arce, who comes out gangbusters, driving his shoulder into the pevlis of Cuéllar and raining overhands down with his own spine arched for maximum torsion. I guess losing a pair of ten-eights on the spin really lit a fire under his culo. Arce not letting up, battering Cuéllar from pillar to post with hooks and harpoons to body and head. Cuéllar throwing some wide swings in return, but also diving in to clinch about the waist of Arce when possible. That confident smirk from earlier has been wiped off his face and Cuéllar actually has a bit of the deer in the headlights about him as the fury of Arce ratchets up. 10-9 Arce 58-54 Cuéllar
Round 7 Cuéllar is jabbing desperately to stave Arce off, and bending his knees to uncork big uppercuts in stereo when Arce cloys to him with his nonstop barrage of hooks above the hips. Arce is shipping leather on the way in but undeterred, landing with less venom but greater volume. Both tiring and falling almost cooperatively into clinches after exchanges now. Cuéllar lands a flush hook on Arce, staggering him backward, ROCKED! Nearly enough to knock him down, and to steal the whole round back after losing two minutes and change of it - but not quite on either front IMO. 10-9 Arce, super close 67-64 Cuéllar
Round 8 Arce is emptying his clip now, throwing every power shot in the book and parlaying his misses into caning the crook of his arm over the nape of Cuéllar's neck to yank him in close for some mutual holding and hitting sessions. Cuéllar getting hoisted up by the midsection and muscled into the ropes by Arce, both flurrying after each push apart until collapsing into each other. Cuéllar down, slip. Wild hooks from both aimed high & low, missing or skimming off each other's thighs and forearms. Arce's engine sputtering but he's still forcing the pace, grinding Cuéllar into the ropes and ripping sequences of hooks from body to head. 10-9 Arce, close 76-74 Cuéllar
Round 9 Cuéllar is dragged into the corner and thumped on the side with heavy left hooks while Arce clasps onto him with the right arm. Cuéllar is hooking the body to pry Arce off. Stiff jab by Cuéllar, then a couple of strapping right hands and one big hook, with Arce wobbling and taking a couple of retreating steps - and CALLED OFF BY THE REF! Very questionable and somewhat anticlimactic stoppage there...although moments later Arce has a dazed look in his eyes and blood spurting copiously from his nose, so idk, maybe it was the right call. TKO9!
Yeah, we saw pretty much the same fight, with Cuellar storming out to an early lead and Arce desperately grinding his way back into the fight and closing the gap on the cards until getting caught. Iffy stoppage, but the ref did have a better view and in that last second Arce did have the look of someone who was completely defenseless. Pretty great fight, really.
