Come on IB, Kell Brook currently has pretty much no relevance outside the UK, so why would the name or draw of his opponent matter outside the UK?
That's why I conceded the point in the 2nd paragraph, but my initial takeaway was utter astonishment that Senchenko could be considered a name or draw. After mulling it over a moment, the penny dropped and it sunk in that knocking out Hatton probably cemented his name overnight across the pond. Still, it's weird - he was on my radar for years because I'm a sick freak with an unhealthy boxing obsession who eagerly seeks out streams to watch paper champs defend against cab drivers all over the world...but in global terms he is, for an ex-titlist, completely obscure and would never have been a blip in the consciousness of any non-diehard if not for becoming a curiosity (and laughingstock) when Malignaggi unexpectedly secured a welterweight belt via TKO at his expense. I think even today, at least for American casual fans, that is the only fact they might know about Senchenko if he even rings a bell. I know Hatton vs. Senchenko was a big deal there, but it wasn't televised or promoted over here and despite Hatton being a former massive star I don't think it even got a mention on SportsCenter that he was returning or that he lost.
Don't me wrong the relevence of this fight anywhere other than the UK is utterly nil. Unfortunately for boxing fans his name is recognizable over here as the casuals loved them some Ricky Hatton, so a win for Brook over Senchenko can raise his profile, as Ricky's redeemer so to speak. As a match up I personally think its pretty poor, but like I said I feel its a profile building fight rather than one for boxing fans.

Oh yeah, it makes perfect sense from a business standpoint. Where Kell is already criticized for his "failure to launch", however, this would seem a grave misstep if he wants to start being taken seriously. He ought to outclass Senchenko and "get one back for Ricky", but he would deserve far more credit taking on someone truly world class and posing at least a slight risk unlike the feather fisted Slava - someone like a Chaves at the least. Next time out absolutely must be an improvement in opponent quality. A lateral move from Senchenko won't do.
No arguments here IB, I'd throw him in a sink or swim fight with Thurman being brutally honest. He's not a young kid any more and needs to get his arse in gear if he's going to achieve anything now. Hopefully Khan will beat Alexander and he can force his way back to mandatory, but to be honest I don't see Khan getting past him regardless.
