He did do better against Krasniqi. Good point. Thompson just didn't have a chance to prove himself as much as the King managed Brewster did.
Brewster must have gotten medical advice to retire due to the detached retina surgery but chose to ignore it and continue his quest for the title. I wonder how much of his continued fighting was due to need of money. But most fighters think they have one more good fight left in them, before learning they don't. Sorry to say, Don King managed fighters usually got screwed over in the end by the snake. Hopefully, Lamon got out of boxing with enough money to take care of his needs. He was one tough hombre.
It's actually common. And lots of fighters have had successful careers after suffering detached retinas. http://articles.philly.com/1990-07-17/sports/25899302_1_eye-tests-retinal-surgery-boxers This is leaning more towards Helenius' having illegal wraps, Brewster not protecting himself in that fight and further damaging the eye. Glancing over some articles, Helenius also appears to blame Sauerland for his injuries, claiming they were not using proper wraps.
Reading Brewster's claim that his handlers were not allowed to witness the hand wrapping of Helenius is a red flag for sure of possible illegalities. I mean that's just a long common tradition/rule. I surprised that something wasn't immediately done to either demand someone inside Helenius's dressing room, or getting the commission to get the hand wraps after the fight.
Helenius wasn't specific in his claim, but I wander if the Brewster fight was the start of his injuries...if his hands were not wrapped fully.
Brewster's injury is unlike other fighters', like Leonard, who had a detached retina which were treated and healed. I'm not sure what his retinal injury is, but he took off his sunglasses in the K2 documentary and had an opacified cornea. That means his cornea was destroyed by an infection or serious abrasion. That condition makes him functionally blind out of they eye unless he has a successful corneal transplant, which is a high risk surgery with guarded prognosis.
Brewster was claiming in an article that Helenius gloves were loaded with a hard/sharp substance that left cuts on his eyelids and Iris/cornea. Criminal if it was true.
His initial injury was like Leonard's. The one in the K2 doc where he was blind came from the Helenius fight. My god, he didn't go into fights looking like that. It ended his career.
Well wladimir Klitschko was not in his prime in 2004. He became a much better fighter by 2007 and peaked around 2010. It's quite clear Vladimirs prime was in his 30s and not 20s.
