I was thinking this...seems to me that some of the more rabid Ali fans on this forum take criticism of Ali rather personally...some only want to hear the good stuff but are unwilling (and in some cases apparently unable) to hear, acknowledge or accept the bad...
Jungo The Louisville Newspaper states. Cassius Clay won the Louisville 1957 Golden Gloves Middleweight Division. 2/7/1957.... (W Dec 3) over....William F. May Not sure on the listed wieght, but it appears to be 158 lbs. 18-days later, he entered the Chicago Golden Gloves Tournament at Light-Heavyweight.
Make up your mind, Pepe. At the top of this page you post that Cassius obviously was growing and had to move up from the middleweight division -- at an earlier point than this. What is obvious is that he gave up age, weight, height and, presumably, experience in the Chicago tournament. Just 18 days earlier he was a 158-pound middle, and now he's taking on a 6-foot-4 guy who's 2-plus years older and a full-blown light heavy. Shows me a lot of what the young Ali was made of. It is also interesting how "Slim Shady" stalked Ali down to Miami in hopes, it seems, of either a handout or the chance to make some money cashing in on an amateur win over someone who was basically a kid. He fights a couple of set-up bouts against bums, then unexpectedly gets knocked out by one of the patsies and retires. Cassius/Ali keeps him around as a sparring partner and has his fun slapping him around the gym or in unrecorded "smokers." Probably let him drive the Caddy to pick up change, too.
Saint Pat,, It was Chris Dundee (Miami Beach Promoter) who convinced Kent Green to come down to Miami in late-1968, to enter back in the 'professional ranks'. Kent was just fine living in Chicago. Kent at 28, was still in good shape (175 to 180 lbs.), and only had plans for entering in a couple of fights, then maybe getting a shot at the Light-Heavyweight in 1969. Of course, being one that 'Knocked Out' Cassius Clay, surely was a positive on the publicity side,,,,,,,,,,something that the Promoter Chris Dundee used to get some local Miami Beach interest in Kent. Kent was not a 'Heavyweight', and a professional bout with the 'stripped Champion' would never happen. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tuesday Night - July 15, 1969 Miami Beach, Convention Hall 'Slim' Kent Green 21-1-0 vs Willie 'Willie Mac' McIntryre 17-10-4 Light-Heavyweights, Kent Green of Chicago and local resident Willie McIntyre will do it again on Tuesday Night, at Convention Hall. The Semi-Main Event bout will be televised. The two combatants, fought an exciting bout 4-months ago at The Auditorium, where the Chicagoan held on for a close 8-Round Decision over 'Willie Mac'. The two Light-Heavyweights will do it again, and hopefully we will get another exciting battle. Kent Green has an amateur Knockout win over stripped Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Ali (then Cassius Clay), the only man known to stop the Champion.
....Meanwhile Ali went on to be world heavyweight champion on numerous occasions, participate in some of the greatest most legendary fights of all time, beat some of the best fighters of all time, go down in sporting history as the most iconic loved athlete of all time... and Slim Green did what exactly? Ali is above having haters, you should be ashamed of yourself.
Let us all agree that Cautious Play was better and greater than Kent Green over all time , shall we ?
I think we can say that, on balance, Clay had a better career (not as good as Ali's career, though). Head-to-head, we have a mystery. We don't really know how the Clay who beat Sonny Liston would have handled a prime Kent Green.
Coopman was drunk against Ali. We don't really know how a focused Coopman would have performed that night.
Kent Green,,,,,,,,, After 1961, lived in the suburbs of Chicago, a quiet life with his family. An honest husband to his wife, and good father to his children. Regarded by his his neighbors, as a 'great guy'. Only got back into boxing in 1968, when Chris Dundee 'had an idea' of bringing Kent down to Florida, to stir up some Cassius Clay - Kent Green controversy. They made a 'few bucks', but Kent was not really into boxing anymore. Every time Kent did a local television interview in Miami Beach, he was told by Chris Dundee to say 'I Knocked Cassius Clay out'. After the 'short comeback', Kent said he had enough of the 'side show'.
Coopman was arguably one of the best heavyweights of the 1970s in Belgium. I wouldn't underestimate him.
Miami Herald Wednesday - July 16, 1969 Chicago Light-Heavyweight Kent Green pounded out a Unanimous 8-Round Decision over local 'Wiilie Mac' McIntyre last night at the Convention Hall. Despite having the hometown fans behind him, 'Willie Mac' 170 lbs. just didn't have the punch to slow the taller 6' 4" Green down. Kent Green 177 lbs., scored with repeated left jabs and hard straight rights throughout most of the fight, as Willie was unable to get untracked. McIntyre, who had given Kent Green all he could handle in a March 1969 bout, was nowhere near as sharp this time, as he was beaten to the punch time and again. Green who has a Knockout over Champion Muhammad Ali (then Cassius Clay) in 1957, hopes to move on with another 2 or 3 {8-Round} bouts during his comeback, before moving up to a Top 25 Light-Heavyweight. Promoter Chris Dundee said he hopes to keep 'Slim Kent' busy, and would like Green to fight a 'former name contender' later this year. Scorecards; {78-74 / 78-74 / 78-74}
I remember when I was about 16, and I sparred a mexican light heavyweight amateur who had come up from the rurals, about a hundred miles, just to get some work. He beat the tar out of me so bad(Really strong puncher) that my Dad had to throw in the towel on a sparring session. I was gun shy for months. It took a very hard amateur fight and a desperate bloody nose to return me to my hard charging, left hook slinging self. Give Ali credit for returning from a devastating knockout to be the gold medalist just years later. That isn't easy. I couldn't have done it.
