anyone else notice this? And does anyone else think Ward had the skill to take advantage of that?

He admitted that he was badly hurt by a Joe Calzaghe right to the body, so this would appear to be the case.

 

i wonder if he was covering up like that when Calzaghe nailed him.

 

Calzaghe is so far above Ward it's absurd!

 

Can't argue with the gif as we can all see it, but he is at the least protecting himself from a possibly more damaging hook upstairs.

 

Ward gets hit more than he should. Can Ward's judges, referee, commentators, home town save him?

 

that was a straight right, which landed on the solar plexus.. it was not a hook, as shown in the gif.

 

I'm pretty sure it was a right hook that landed to the side around his guard. Just watched the fight a couple days ago.

He said after the fight that he had focused on the body (because he had seen the Calzaghe fight). He hits harder than Ward and is a very busy fighter.

Look where it got him.

 

After re-watching it I think you're right. If that's the case, Kessler's vulnerability to body punches is probably overstated. Anybody can be hurt by a punch to the solar plexus, and the punch doesn't even have to be particularly hard.

 

Bute throws a particularly good uppercut to the solar plexus. :think

I never thought Bute had much of a chance against Kessler because he is so good technically and has a great jab that in my opinion would cause Bute lots of problems.

But if Bute can work to the body with the right hook and the left uppercut to the solar plexus like he did against Zuniga (who obviously isn't 1/2 the fighter Kessler is). Bute might be able to pull it off.

 

I think the Calzaghe fight was fluke. He just got caught. I don't think Kessler is necessarily anymore open to the punch than anyone else. Has he shown a weakness to body punches in any other fights?
