Kid Gavilan vs Jose Napoles

I like Jose in battle of Cuban greats!!! Gavilan kinda fizzled out after beaten by BOBO didnt he? Jose one of my alltime faves who was classier???:good

he fought olson with an injured hand and still lasted the distance anyway.

 

Napoles is really underappreciated, overall he has a better package than Galivan for me, better offensively and would figure Galivan out, 9-6 decision for for me

 

And Napoles kinda fizzled out after being beaten by Muniz (or what should've been a loss), didn't he? Neither hold any relevance whatsoever to a prime for prime matchup at Welterweight.

 

I feel Gavilan is an underrated puncher; he'd have more K.O's nowadays as he stopped a lot of his opponents really....fights were prone to going on for longer then they should.

I get a feeling he cuts Mantequilla with a flurry and stops him. Gavilan would punch in a windmill sometimes, and seemed hard to predict and time, and although Napoles was more than capable of figuring him out, I feel Gavilan, in his Prime, was pretty damn good at WW.

Didn't Ray Robinson say he was one of his toughest opponents? Underrated at times, I can't remember who but someone a while back said Floyd would 'school' Gavilan at 147 :rofl

 

I Really not studying the KEEDS record,but maybe im wrong he didnt last that long at PRIME. Big Red Lopez TWICE,Hedgmon Lewis TWICE:roll:!!!I think lewis very underated(I saw most of his fights) In fact Jose AVIODED Like PLAGUE for years JR> welter,Light champs!! You remind me of someone who used to post here that I haven't seen around in a while. Anyways, there was nothing short or incomplete about Gavilan's prime, he was simply past his best days and above his best weight by the time he lost to Bobo. A fight between he and Napoles at WW is about 50/50 IMO.

 

One of the toughest fantasy matches to pick really, i would lean towards Napoles ifi was forced, simply because he was slightly more consistent, but that would be nitpicking. Wouldnt like to pick.

 

I always felt Gavilan was a bit more slicker and skilled, and had the long jab and the range advantage to boot. On top of that, he demonstrated his ability against a better and more consistent quality of opposition IMO.

I like Gavilan by decision or cuts stoppage.

 

Yes Im one of those guys blessed to see the GREATS around LA.Jose was one of em!!!To be honest,I dont know that much about the KEED. Im JUST GOING on memory seeing him vs. a top middle &some highlights!!I was blessed to see a lot of the greats (Mando Ramos a beautiful man,Rueben KO King Olivares,Frankie Crawford):happyJose was beaten by Backus(a toughie) On cuts,Jose W rematch but he was past peak!!! THE FIGHT REALLY ...Pick em!!!!..Sweet PEA Im NEWBIE ..your tough judge Im 60,love the ring trying to learn MMA???Is that a good thing knowing me????

 

You know gang,around that time a guy named Zovek Barajas beat Backus at Olympic,he didnt last long Philly kid Billy Lloyd kod him twice,he got some disease FIZZLED OUT There were a lot of greats all ERAS,hBUT Napoles was just SIZZLING!!Sweet Pea I just mean a lot of guys every where ,just jump on a guy seeing him ONE timeAndy Lee(ATG???)Gamboa the rage(how long??) I sat at Ringside Liston others.No GUYS SMOOTH as Butter WAS..the REAL REAL deal!!!!!!

Despite his reach advantage, he didn't have the out-boxing skills of Napoles IMO, and I definitely wouldn't consider him slicker or more skilled, or even as slick, from an offensive or defensive standpoint. Gavilan's advantage would be in close range, though Napoles was the bigger puncher.

 

Spot on with that. I always said that in this fight Gavilan's best chance is to relentlessly outwork Napoles with them brilliantly put together combos and flurries inside and in close. Not too sure if it can be done though, as game as he was i don't know if he was the type to keep going for 15 without taking some rests along the way.

Still though you could keep going allday, it's 50-50 in my book. I pick Napoles if pushed.
