Was leafing through some old mags the other day and saw an article on the late Kiko Bejines. Love to hear some thoughts/memories from folks. He lost his life in the ring, deserves a little recognition.
The scary thing was, Kiko B. was offed by Alberto Davila in 1983 who was known to punch like a little *****..... Davila was a boxer; not a puncher...... Plus, he was over-the-hill when he KO'd and Killed Kiko B....... FREAKY! MR.BILL
I remember Bejines was favored in this fight, he was real big in LA at the time. As for Mr Bill id say Davila hitting like a ***** is a little harsh, he wasnt a puncher but he was an average puncher. In fact i used to see him at the LA boxing gym about 10 years ago when he was training David Kamau, I told him my dad thought that Davilas power improved when he got older (as he scored more kos) Davila replied"Tell your Dad that i could always punch that i just fought some real tough guys early on" lol he sounded a little offended. He used to yell at Kamau all the time telling him that he wasnt half the fighter he was LOL LOL he was kind of a cranky dude . As for Davila being washed up i think he was still pretty good when he beat Bejines he didnt fade out until about 3 years later.
Thanks guys, I was expecting to hear from the two of you on this. As for Davila's punching power, yeah it would've been tough to spark out the likes of Gomez, Duarte, Pintor x2, Zarate, Lora x 2. Davila fought some serious competition. I remember Lora trying to embarass Davila a bit near the end of his career. Lost some respect for Lora. Kiko could punch a bit as I recall and gave Davila a tough fight (I've never seen it).
A tough fight indeed & I believe Kiko was slightly ahead at the time of the stoppage. What became of the brothers? I believe there were three fighters all together. The others not as succesful as Kiko. Out on a limb, I think they were from Guadalajara?? Davila was very crafty, during a match, it started to rain. Davila positioned himself to were the rain was always into the face of his opponent. needless to say Davila came on to take the decision. (opponents last name Sanchez)??
Yeah, I think there were 3 Bejines brothers (Oscar and David), and possibly a fourth. Oscar was pretty good, but agreed Kiko was the best................Pretty sure you're right about Davila vs Enrique Sanchez in Miami in a rainstorm. Think that was on youtube for awhile (if not still).
