I'm going with Kirkland in this one. Kirkland has some pretty good handspeed when he uses it. I think it'll be essential for him to do it in the Julio fight and I believe he will do just that.
The things you say about Julio, you could very well say the same thing about Kirkland, and vice versa. Julio is, without question, the best opponent Kirkland has faced. While it's debatable that Kirkland is even the third or fourth best opponent Julio has been in the ring with. Julio has at least shown to have some boxing skill in his fights with Ishe Smith and Sergiy Dzinziruk. He boxed Ishe on virtually even terms and boxed well against Dzinziruk for around six rounds, until Sergiy figured him out and took over in the second half of the fight. Smith and Dzinziruk both are far more skilled boxers than Kirkland. Kirkland is basically a face first brawler, who tries to slip the occasional shot. He has no true boxing skill to speak of. Certainly not the type of fighter I'd picture dishing out too many boxing lessons. That's not to say Kirkland isn't a good fighter, or a tough out, because he is. He's also as one dimensional as they come, but that one dimension can devastating. I expect Kirkland to come out quick, as usual, possibly even dropping Julio early. But eventually I think his kill or be killed style is going to do him in, and he's going to run into a counter shot he never saw coming.
Julio was outboxed by Smith and won on activity. Kirkland is no lower than than Julio's third best opponent. Ishe was actually brought in as Kirkland's sparring partner in this fight. Julio is getting knocked out in this fight.
I have Kirkland by ko. If I'm wrong I won't be disappointed though.... This is bound to end brutally.
Ishe Smith fought Julio and was Kirkland's sparring partner. Here is what he had to say about the fight; RB: You have fought Julio before and now you sparred with Kirkland. Do you have a prediction for their fight? IS: Julio is a natural power puncher. How can I put it. Julio to me is like Trinidad. Trinidad doesn't look strong but he is strong. James Kirkland has the shape and build of Mike Tyson. If he grabs you he can squeeze you. He has a lot of strength. I think that with that being said he is an animal. Julio is going to have to knock him out to beat him. There is no punk in him at all. He is a young determined fighter and I don't see Julio beating him. I honestly don't. He is too strong and too hungry. Too determined. To break it down the speed edge goes to Kirkland. The power is even because James had on 16 ounces and Julio had on 10. Chin I would have to say probably would go to Julio because I don't recall him ever being down. Determination I would give to Kirkland. I just think he has more intangibles. I don't see anything Julio can do to offset James. You have to be determined to not go down against Kirkland and that is what I was. The first day I got in at 2 in the morning and was sparring at 1000am. I didn't eat any breakfast or anything. I sparred 12 rounds with him. Whatever they threw at me I did it. I was determined not to go down. I wouldn't quit. I don't think Julio can deal with that.
I belive both of them are not just Julio... As for Kirkland Boxing ''skills'' i just see a fighter who wants to take you out from the very first round by throwing bombs and getting hit back easy.
Julio won the fight not just by activity, but by having enough skill and power to keep Ishe honest. Had Ishe been more active, he would have presented Julio with more opportunities to get off as well. For the record I had Ishe winning 96-94, but wasn't in the least bit upset with the decision since the fight had a lot of close rounds. Julio was outboxed in spots, no doubt...but not thoroughly outboxed. He fought well considering Ishe is a guy hard to look good against. I would say Dzinziruk, Smith, and Quintana all were better opponents than Kirkland. Or at least from a stylistic point of view, they presented tougher challenges. I actually would prefer to see that happen since I'd love to see Kirkland fight Angulo while both they still have that 0. Though it's doubtful considering Kirkland's history with Shaw.
I take it you're comfortable saying Kirkland is better than Smith and Bundrage then, because he's not better than Dzinziruk or Quintana. I realize it's been almost 2 years since he fought Ossie Duran now, but if he can't hurt Julio early and he tries the same tactics he tried against Duran, Julio will probably win most of the later rounds.
Most definately. Who the hell would argue that Bundradge is better than Kirkland anyway? Stop right there. There's no need to go any further. Kirkland is only 24 right now. Young fighters can change and learn a lot in two years.
julio by KO. kirkland is way too open for shots and julio is not the guy you want to be against if that is the case. i posted this awhile ago.
outboxed? get the hell outta here. ishe got beat fair and square. maybe if he didnt just sit back every fight on play defense he might actually win! didnt he win his last fight like that!?
