Agreed. I think the two big fights on this card are being set up for the "home" guys to win. Davis hasn't remotely earned a title shot, but here we are. Pedraza obviously got a good enough offer to note continue defending in Puerto Rico forever, lol.
If both fights go to the cards, I could see one of, or even both Pedraza and Degale being given short shrift by the judges -- even more so if they both try to simply shade the rounds instead of trying to dominate them. Think Degale Philly Shelling and potshotting with his back to the ropes for good portions of rounds, as he tends to do.
Yeah, good points. Normally if there are two home fighters on one card they'll be ok with shamelessly screwing one, and fairly judge the other fight to have the facade of "fairness". If you coast in fights, especially all over the world as a road warrior... You're probably going to eventually lose your titles in a close fight. He's knicked a few close ones in recent years, and he had other very close and competitive fights in the immediate aftermath of the Groves last (Though he had a groin injury he was rehabbing?)
I agree with all the above, Russell. Also, didn't Degale recover from a serious hand injury a few years back? (Maybe around the time of the Periban fight). I believe Degale started laying back on the ropes during rounds at around this time, with a view to protecting the repaired hand, only for it to become an ingrained habit with him.
Not sure about the hand, but he had a lower abdominal or groin injury, I remember the talk of him only being really fully healed as of the Periban match (Like you said) where he blew the very durable Mexican out quickly. Then again, Periban has been battered in a few fights. He does have some very bad habits that could cost him in locations where everything from the judges (Even without corruption, think about the crowd noise) to the traveling experience is already against him. Just things to think about in close fights.
