    I like all that stuff too, but I just thought Kill Bill had shitty dialog and made some bonehead choices. Tarantino's dialog in Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Natural Born Killers, and True Romance was just so much better. A lot of this stuff feels forced and contrived, like cut and pasted. There's a lot of great ideas and a lot of not so great ideas in Kill Bill, just like there is in Death Proof. I think if he'd compressed the narrative to one two hour film it would be a lot tighter, more streamlined, with a lot fewer dumb parts. It felt like he wasn't making choices and wasn't editing his work. Sometimes the writing just didn't work, like when Lucy Lui is making fun of that guy for looking like Charlie Brown, I was like "Yeah, he's dressed exactly like Charlie Brown. It's not subtle. You wrote this scene and then told a costume maker to make you a Charlie Brown costume then you cast a guy to wear it. It's like playing T-ball where you just set the ball up to be hit." The action scene right after that was great but some of the lead up left a bad taste in my mouth.

    Kevin Smith should still be in movie jail for that one. But he's loose now to make Tusk and Yoga Hosers. The system is flawed.

    He was good in Punch Drunk Love.

    Yeah, I know a couple of guys who felt like that. Your favorite Kubrick is probably 2001. I had to watch that a couple of times to stop hating it and see some of the greatness.

    James Cameron and Ridley Scott are very good visual film makers but their sense of writing is terrible. I think Gale Anne Hurd and Kathryn Bigelow were the writing brains of their collaboration when they were married to Cameron and that's how we got Terminator, T2, and Aliens. '84-91 Cameron is good and everything since has been crap.

    That is so weird. It was more Elmore Leonard than Tarantino. You a fan of his or that kind of crime thriller?

    Yeah, I get what you're saying, but ultimately, as long as its not all that egregious, I don't care that much. Everyone rips everyone of in Hollywood and Martin never made it this big secret that The Departed was a remake, it was pretty common knowledge. And I was fascinated with the Whitey Bulger case back then, because of America's Most Wanted, and Nicholson's character is based on him. For some reason the original has never appealed to me, I'm hot and cold with Asian films, it usually depends on the Director in question.

    I love the languorous pace of Heat, I'm a big one on vibe, ambiance, mood, like Usyk, I'm Feel, I'm Very Feel, and the feel of Heat is right up my alley.
    I thought Usual Suspects was ridiculously overrated, it annoyed me actually. So what, oh a twist, whoopty doo. Same goes for Se7en, which I found repellent at times.
    Have you seen Dellamorte Dellamore? Its one of the best films of the 90's and one of the best things Italy has produced in the last 30 years since its heyday from the 60's to the early 80's.
    I was obsessed and still am with Stalinist Russia, it might just be me, but its damn compelling and the lead is very fatherly and warm, did a great job.
    Ehhh, Bill Hicks is an overrated ****ing bore, Leary did him better than he did himself.
    Robert Duvall is a beast, one of the best character actors period, I almost added Convicts from that same year.
    Never got the hype around The Fugitive, its just a highfalutin action flick, not Oscar worthy.
    I love crazy chicks.
    Huge Woody fan, hence WMCJ, Larry Flynt and Palmetto featuring prominently in my Top 10's, I think I realized what a force he was before anyone.
    If Glengarry Glen Ross was all Pacino and Alec, it would have made Top 10. Too much Jack Lemmon. It was alright.
    Goodfellas is brilliant, but I think it gets a little too much love.
    Massive Rutger Hauer fanboy, and Blind Fury is one of his crowning achievements. And what other film has Randall Tex Cobb being bisected at the waist?:lol: Also it was released in the US in 90, I think it was only released in West Germany at the time. Leonard Maltin listed it as 1990 when I was keeping track back then.:lol: Maybe I should update it.
    I spent quite a bit of time at Dulles as a youth, I have a ton of family in Virginia, so Die Hard 2 resonated with me.:lol: Also there's only three good Die Hard films, and they're all solid.
    Its a toss up, but I think I lean Another 48hrs slightly.
    How many Kurt Russell avatars have I had? That's your answer for the Captain Ron pick.
    The Alien from I Come In Peace sucking juices out of people's necks stayed with me.:lol:

    Yeah maybe the dialogue isn't up to the typical QT standard, but he more than made up with it with the overall feel and it was his most stylish film to date. Also at that point I was a devotee of Sonny Chiba, after his mentions in True Romance, so I geeked out on that and I watched repeated they ran of Kung Fu with Carradine as a kid.
    I thought Jersey Girl was a throwback homage to late 80's romance films and had a hint of weak John HUghes, so I gave it extra credit for that.
    Who cares if Tom Cruise plays a Samurai, it was a great movie, that's all that matters to me, you weren't one of those annoying liberals that tried to ruin Thanksgiving every year were you?:lol:
    Lynch is a total weirdo, but I'm totally on his wavelength, I actually understood the points of both Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive, without having anyone explain them to me. Not sure what that says about me thought.:lol:
    Actually I hated 2001, and still not that fond of it. My 2 favorite Kubrick film is... what else, The mother****ing Shining and A Clockwork Orange.:ggg
    As far as Cameron goes, I'm a fan of Italian Horror films and Spaghetti Westerns, clearly dialogue isn't all that important to me.:lol:
    More of a Blaxploitation thing with me than an Elmore Leonard. But Elmore's okay, one of his most underrated works is 52 Pick Up.

    I'll add my 2 cents on your picks when I get a chance, probably after the day long Boxing festivities tomorrow.

    They have twist endings but that's hardly why they are great. M Night Shamalan's movies all have twist endings and nobody likes most of them. I think The Usual Suspects had just about everything you could ask for. Great dialog plotting, acting, characters. That goes for Se7en although to a lesser extent. The flaw with 7 is that those library books aren't what you'd check out if you were a serial killer. The library books are what you would check out if you were a screenwriter writing that movie. Serial killers are obsessed with other serial killers, true crime, and police procedures.

    Yeah, Dellamorte Dellamore aka Cemetery Man aka Dylan Dog. I saw that. I thought it was a B movie, a cult thing for horror fans, like Braindead, Zombie, or Cannibal Holocaust. I thought it was kind of terrible.

    True, and I liked Leary's performance in No Cure For Cancer quite a bit more than anything by Bill Hicks, but he did steal 20 minutes of material from Hick's specials. And it's still wrong for artists to plagiarize another artist's art.

    That's like saying Terminator is just a highfalutin action flick. They are both the epitome of the high paced chase movie. Hair's breadth escape after hair's breadth escape, running running running, always ratcheting up the tension and never letting the audience rest. They are nearly perfect films, perfect of their kind like Lethal Weapon or Die Hard. Nothing is just an action flick. There are good action flicks and there are bad action flicks. On whatever scale or ladder that you rate an action flick one must necessarily be the best of it's kind, the one that you compare the rest to. I think Fugitive is that for the chase movie.

    It's not just the performances. It's the David Mamet script. Very rarely has there been better dialog on the silver screen. You have to reach back to Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, The Lion in Winter, or Network to find something comparable. The play won a slew of awards. It was this and the Untouchables three years later which cemented Mamet as one of our great writers. For dialog he's right there with Tarantino.

    Yeah, who likes good stuff anyway?

    I figured.

    Fair enough. I do think that's what Kevin Smith was going for, I just don't think he succeeded.

    Nah, I hate those guys who protest Columbus Day. In all of the historical accounts I've read from the time period, the Indians always attacked explorers without provocation, committed genocide, cannibalism, slavery and were generally unpleasant. I figure we're here now and it's been our land for two hundred years. Deal with the historical reality. Everybody is from somewhere else. Might as well tell the English to give back the land the Normans, Angles, and Saxons conquered from the Iceni and Dobunni or whoever they conquered it from.

    But that wasn't the only thing that bothered me about The Last Samurai. That's just a **** title. What bugged me were things like Tom Cruise being so easily adopted into the Samurai tribe to the point that he gained the love of the wife of the man he killed. That bugged me. Tom Cruise killed a guy now he's living in that guys house, ****ing his wife, wearing his armor, making his kids call him daddy. It seemed a little far fetched. Or the way that he has two lessons in sword fighting and then he's able to defeat four ninjas who ambush him. Nobody is that quick a learner. He's beating people who've done this their whole lives after just a couple of months. No.
