Okay, I have a movie suggestion for you all, now don't call me a homo.:D

A Star Is Born is a ****ing masterpiece, believe the hype, because its real. As a fan of 70's movies, this is one of the most authentically 70's feeling movies I've seen in quite some time, it has the vibe of some of Clint Eastwood's more somber fare, and is obviously very reminiscent of the Kristofferson-Streisand Star Is Born, which is the best version IMO. Everything in the film is pitch perfect, the acting, the performances, the cinematography, the pacing, it moves like a bullet yet never feels rushed for a movie that's 2 hours and 15 minutes.

While, yeah I'm a Lady Gaga fan, and since I saw her in AHS: Hotel, I was expecting her to be good, but... she by far exceeded my expectations, I've seen actresses with decades of experience that are incapable of giving such an emotionally layered, complex, raw and genuine performance in a film. I hope she sticks around and continues making films, as good of a pop star as she is, she's an even better actress. Yeah, the film played to her strengths in theory, but in reality, many others attempting a crossover that played to their strengths have faltered miserably. So ironically, this movie is perfectly named, a star has been born. She deserves any award she's given, she's that good in it.

Bradley Cooper was equally brilliant, it almost felt like a more harrowing extension of the Bad Blake character Jeff Bridges played in Crazy Heart. He's brutally vulnerable, and painfully fragile. And the finale I found pretty goddamn devastating. The relationship he has with his father and half brother, and how its played out and affected his worldview, addictions, self image is spot on, as is the repetitive cyclical nature that addiction issues have in families and not living up to the larger the life image you create in your head of your flawed role models can have on your psyche. Its easily the best performance he's ever given. And he has a long career ahead of him as a director, this was a hell of a debut film.

I love the casting, it added an extra layer of earnestness, pain and authencity, Sam Elliot was big in the 70's and hung on in the 80's, but is a has been now, Dave Chappelle and Andrew Dice Clay, both titans at one time, and Dave by his own hand, and Dice through the cruel nature of Hollywood, both fell by the wayside, and to a large extent, are both has beens, so all three can draw from real life experiences that add to the overall effectiveness of the film.

Its a great takedown of Hollywood as well and everything the phony, predatory, leeching, soul crushing star culture out there represents, and while its doing that, its also a throwback to a time when filmmakers didn't obsessively shove politics into everything they make, looking to make a statement, and sway people with propaganda, and instead focused on making sentimental, gut wrenching, emotionally draining epics as well. You should all see it.:deal:

Great review dude, I've been stung by a few shilled-up "great" films/series on IMDB recently. (Get out, that one about billboards signs in Missouri, House on Haunted Hill all massively and suspiciously overrated), so held off on this one. Will give it a whirl.

You'll be happy to know that I thought Get Out while decent, was vastly overrated, Three Billboards was okay, but a step down from the directors previous films In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths, haven't seen Haunted Hill though. Also don't pay attention to the IMDB reviews for big films unless they give a detailed response, like with A Star Is Born, all the good 7-10 star reviews, they're effusive and detailed with their praise. While all the hipster, I'm too cool for the room, I hate feeling anything, bitter, trendy, meh Hollywood and Lady Gaga sucks types all give it one star, and leave borderline monosyllabic reviews, they're just trying to drive the overall score down because they're contrarian dickheads. They probably haven't even seen it.

I defer to your far greater knowledge of films and their appreciation but from a "film casual" POV, I found Billboards was watchable, quite enjoyable but it didn't seem to know what it wanted to be. Was it a murder suspense or an account about a cat-lady's eccentric daily foibles. I didn't realise she was the same actress as in Fargo however, now I did enjoy that and the later tv series.

    Get Ou
t, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. More than a few on the review sites have it down as the best film of all time (wut, for me that's Reservoir Dogs). It had suspense and was gripping to a degree (the hypnotist mother bit with the cup is cool) but when they introduced that basement surgery I switched it off, it was ridiculous. You could see what was coming a mile away. It reminded me of those mid-late 90's films about sadistic Nazi dentists. The main actor was also in a British comedy a few years ago as well, so it may have tainted my view somewhat.

I'll leave the horror series for your assessment but needless to say, it helps if you're interested in dysfunctional family dynamics to a large degree lol.

I thought Billboards was decent as well, especially Sam Rockwell.

I watched the beginning of Get Out and decided it was just racial drivel to make liberals cream themselves, overrated like 12 years A Slave. But since I had to cancel my cable/internet package I picked it up at the library anyway. That and the gay Oscar bate film Moonlight. Grabbed LA LA Land too, the narcissistic self-referential Hollywood musical I couldn't get through the first five minutes of.

And for the record, I agree with you regarding Reservoir Dogs. Great film. Although, there are a couple of dozen I'd put above it like The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

Yeah, ditto what @OvidsExile said, its just a bunch of usually erudite white liberal PC social justice Buzzfeed types that double and triple down on hyping anything that pushes a white people suck agenda. Had Get Out just been called what it was, a solid fun little horror film, there would be no backlash, but instead, this crowd that virtually never watch horror films, decide to elevate standard genre film by way of hype to an Oscar contender, which is flat out absurd, and an insult to anyone with a degree of reason and logic. For some reason, along the way these "movie buffs" they just so happen to miss the hundreds of socially relevant or revolutionary horror films that have been produced up until now. Its because politics dominate their worldview, and films are merely a tool to brainwash people with their messages even more.

Three Billboards was more of a social commentary/mood piece on forgiveness and coming to terms with loss and regret more than anything. It was a not so obvious art film. I love dysfunctional family dynamics, its my cup of tea, hell I even watch Marriage Boot Camp. Maybe I will check it out.
