I've talked with Calvin Watkins (author of the article being discussed here) before via email, and I like him and respect a lot of his work, so I don't want to take gratuitous shots at him. The last I knew about Calvin, he was working at the Dallas Morning News. That stint may have ended, or maybe he chose to end it, I'm not sure. Watkins was great covering the Terrell Owens-Dallas Cowboys fallout last year and over this past spring (American football). That's the time period when I contacted him regarding a specific report involving Owens. I read this piece about the Wlad fight and thought "Oh, boy." This is not Calvin's best work and, suffice to say, he was not at the fight (not that he, or anyone else, needed to be in Germany to comment on Klitschko and the division). If Calvin thinks Haye has any shot whatsoever with Wlad, well...yeah. I'll just leave it there. I'm not aware of Watkins' full journalistic background, but I never knew he wrote about boxing until I saw this piece.
Why is Waldo seen as boring anyway.I personally love his precision power punching style.Even if he only lands 4 or 5 punches a round its a beautiful sight when they do land and you know when he fights their will either be a big K.O,knockdowns,a TKO or a guy quiting because of a beating.Id rather watch him than Americans Dawson,Hopkins,Tarver,Toney or the light heavy Roy Jones.None of them guys hit like Klitschko and box most of the time for the decision.
Is that the only word some people know? how is it racist to point out that some (not all I know) people have trouble warming to Wlad because he's white and heavyweight has been black dominated since the 50's, and some people can't accept times have changed.
Wladimir is the best heavyweight champion today and is by far the more proven guy against the current crop of top heavyweights.. Boxing is a global sport. Germany isn't some rural backwater, its a big country with a huge economy and a great passion for boxing. To suggest that Wlad is 'irrelevant', because he doesn't fight in the US very often, it totally ******ed in the extreme. Some people obviously think their country is the centre of the universe.
