Pascal was close to getting stopped by Dawson. I basically predicted the kov fight to play out like it did. Tarver had a better chin and handled himself better. If Kovalev were getting to him, he'd pack it in and lose a bunch of rounds without getting knocked out. But if kovalev left himself open like he did with Pascal, he might get tagged with something big.
Kov is an aggressive fighter who gets hit clean often, he's pretty damn durable. Pascal was loading up with some heavy bombs that didn't phase him. It would take a Moore, Foster, or Charles level puncher to put a dent in this guy right now.
I've never doubted Kovalev's power.. Dude hits like a heavyweight. What I want to see is how well he takes a shot from someone who can actually hurt him.. None of his recent opponents pack a particularly hard shot. While I'd favor Sergei to beat Adonis, its not something that I'd feel comfortable betting money on. Stevenson is brutal with the counters, has huge power and Kovalev has the tendency to rush in.. Might be a dangerous situation.
Did you see his last fight with Pascal? Pascal landed a true chin checker, and Kovalev took it well. Kovalev's chin is far from dismal. It's solid. Besides, Tarver was not a big puncher. Outside of Jones, most of his matches with top 15 talent went the distance
Yeah, I'm happy that Kovalev has been chin checked. He got engine checked too. Pascal did absolutely the right thing in that fight and got nowhere near beating him.
Right. Pascal rolled the dice and did what he had to do to win. It was not enough. Kovalev is a very aggressive technical puncher with a big time engine, and solid chin. He's quickly becoming my favorite guy to watch. A blend of old school I'll fight anyone anywhere with a new school offense.
Tarver carried his power to heavyweight. Kov was sparked in the amateurs and dropped by Boone. And briefly hurt by B-Hop in the 12th. And he does get flustered a bit when hit, although he recovers quickly.
It's worth mentioning that Pascal is pretty ****e.I thought it was quite worrying he was able to hit Kovalev so much and slow him down to the body. Kov's arms were dangling by his waist by the 6th round ffs. That said i never rated Tarver much other than as a puncher.Kovalev puts his offense together better and should be able to outland Antonio for a decision as long as he doesn't get sparked.
Tarver was nothing special outside of that one big moment vs Jones...and maybe the mediocre decision over Roy in their third bout. Kovalev is still a work in progress and takes Tarver to a decision win, decking the milk dud along the way. Tarver doesn't "spark" anybody. Like Hopkins himself recently said, Kovalev is the real deal.
No he did not! Tarver Ko'd a journeyman and a blow up cruiser weight best known these days for bing a trainer at heavyweight. In the amateurs Kovalev had 200+ fights. One stoppage loss in that many fights indicates the reverse of what you are trying to say. Besides, we are talking about light heavies. Other posters already commented on your dismal chin comment. Just admit it was a mistake and move on. Kovalev's chin is far from dismal. Its solid.
