1. round - Kovalev 2. round - Kovalev 3. round - Ward 4. round - Even 5. round - Ward 6. round - Kovalev 7. round - Ward 8. round - Ward 9. round - Ward 10. round - Kovalev 11. round - Ward 12. round - Even 6-4 for Ward with 2 rounds even. Knockdown for Kovalev. Ward wins by a point.
Ward snatched a few rounds but could call it a robbery for how ithe fight went on. I was geting ready to greet Ward as the great chinned dude who got beaten by a realtively wide margin.
115-113 Ward Kovalev much better than I thought. Lots of close rounds but I liked Ward's cleaner work. This content is protected Scoring rounds is always subjective.
I scored it 114-113 for Ward, but I pick 114-114 here on a second thought. A draw would be the fair outcome, but to get there you would need to score a round even, which rarely happens (maybe it should more often). Clear Ward rounds: 5, 7, 9, 11 Clear Kovalev rounds: 1, 2, 4, 10 Close Ward rounds: 3, 8, 12 Close Kovalev rounds: 6 I could see rounds 3 & 6 being 10-10.
I had it 114-113 ward. I'll have to go back and watch though, reading all these comments makes me question my self. I'm a fan of both fighters and felt it was close fight, but felt he allowed ward to get back into it.
I was surprised that I ended up with the same score as the judges. So obviously I think they got it right. I scored it as below. The most disputed round in my scorecard is probably the 4th, that I gave to Ward but I saw later more gave it to Kovalev. I did think Ward pretty clearly won the 5th to 9th. The 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th, and 12th were all close and hard to score. 1 Kovalev 2 Kovalev 10-8 3 Kovalev 4 Ward 5 Ward 6 Ward 7 Ward 8 Ward 9 Ward 10 Kovalev 11 Ward 12 Kovalev
People are giving by ward too much credit for his work in thr later rounds. He just back peddled more and went to the body while sticking to the jab. Nothing was overly effective, I still favoured Kovalev hard shots up top and power that had word constantly on the run.
Good honest post. 1. Ward instigated every clinch in the fight and there were a lot. He threw elbows and used the clinches to try to maneuver Kovalev so he could take cheap shots on the break. He got a few of those away but Kovalev was quite smart at nullifying these. Ward also used his headbutt at least once, which I think was what bloodied Kovalev's nose, although I can't be sure. How can Ward get points for any of this dirty work? Clinches are not allowed in the rules of boxing. 2. Kovalev landed the cleaner, heavier shots throughout the fight. Ward got some solid jabs in, but a jab is not equal to a power shot. 3. As the champion, Kovalev pressured and followed Ward the entire fight. Ward didn't make the fight, he ran like a coward. How can the challenger, running away, throwing occasional jabs, win every single close round over the reigning champion? Boxing is in its death knell. Eventually no-one will watch it and the boxing authorities will be so stupid they don't even know why. It's a corrupt sport run by corrupt people who are only in it for money.
Kovalev 115-112 K.D and being the champ should've been made it crystal clear. but what can we expect with american judges, referee and in an american city, rematch in Moscow 2017 with all russian officials, unfair??
I forgot to add, that because Ward was surviving after round 3, people were giving him rounds because he wasn't the human punching bag he had been. Ward was still getting hit with more clean power shots throughout the fight, just less than at the start. This doesn't mean winning rounds, just doing better than before. I didn't see a clear round for Ward. I saw many clear Kovalev rounds.
