I wish I had saved some of the posts at the time. Never in a unification fight have I seen someone get dominated so badly. Calzaghe literally won every second of every round.
The best quote at the time from a board member about a pre fight photograph was "man Joe looks like a man on his way to the gas chamber" PRICELESS!!
Hopkins didnt have Frank Warren watching his back..brain drain roflk even that Jock scott Harrison managed to win the WBO belt (warren boxing organisation)
No Comment. Depends, If you class Top 100 then he plainly is, if you class it as Top 50 then no. A Fwank Quote after Calzaghe left him?. Shocker. He's nice about Hatton aswell. While you're there can we have some Tyson quotes about King. Boxer/Promoter quotes are unbiased after a split. Near Gospel. What's the difference between an undefeated American power puncher, and a European UD specialist? Answer that , and you will find your answer mate, and it's got nothing to do with Pav or Calzaghe. But to do with why Hopkins accepted the fight with Pavlik in 07 and turned down Calzaghe in 02. As fans it might grate on us, but it's the ****ing cold truth. Still amazes me how so called fans of Boxing still cant grasp risk/reward. Challenge who?? The Euro LH that was getting ducked by Jones?. If Jones couldnt make the fight with DM, can you enlighten me as to how Calzaghe gets the fight?.
Jones was P4P no:1 ...why should he travel to Germany??? for the WBO belt???? Michelzewski wasnt even a p4per he was a dangerous Light heavy yes. If yr the name why Travel ? Calzaghe was a name in the UK..he had no apeal in US ...where it mattered! why he stayed in uk
Bingo. I even complained before the fight that Joe had no business in the ring with a green rookie like Lacy. I expected a UD. But never a one sided beat down like that. Lacy looked great at that Scottish castle on the AA undercard beating up cans. Bit diffrent when they punch back..
Lacy was an ok fighter...He wasn't as good as he was hyped up to be.....Joe schooled him with ease..Made him look ametuer IMO!
As for Lacy, no he wasnt the second coming of Tyson as 90% of Boxing writers wanted you to believe but YOU still bought the hype. Revisionism at it's finest and it will never be topped If your struggling, Imagine an American SMW coming to fight a Brit WBO belt holder. He is undefeated, has an Olympic backround, a stunning KO over a known American, wins over former World Champs, indeed he is the IBF(One of the proper belts) Champ, Has been billed as, and tipped as the new Tyson, and not by some random clown on the internet but by the American Boxing Press, to go all the way to Heavyweight Champ. He is given the Cover of Ring Magazine and arrives in the UK with a bigger entourage than Tyson did. He is the overwhelming favourite, (and that doesnt even give it justice by the way, it was pathetically one sided in predictions), to take care of the skinny protected white Euro that couldnt crack eggs. Then watch what Calzaghe did. You dont have to defend that performance. Imagine if Dawson had a punch, the Olympic background, a chin, the cover of Ring, an entourage dwarfing Tyson and was being tipped as the next HW champ. Then imagine him being humiliated by Nathan Cleverly. That how big a chance Calzaghe was given, and the denials, and the "I knew better" **** is pathetic. The injury IMO hurt Lacy more than anything because it didnt let him get back on the horse after that fight, he struggled with even his comeback fights, which is a shame. He would never have been what he was billed to be, but he could have easily got a belt back and kept it, and had more than a few decent pay days for his family off the back of being a name in the States.
Who did Jeff Lacy beat? Seriously.. I beg you to name one fighter that he beat that you can say is/was a top-level fighter. Just because some of my fellow yanks bought into the hype doesn't mean all Americans thought Lacy was great. It was obvious the guy had flaws and could be outboxed. Omar Sheika and Robin Reid both at times made him look bad. Calzaghe didn't ruin him. His shoulder surgery ruined him, combined with him just never being that good, just overhyped and overrated... too many people looking for the next Tyson to latch onto and they bought into the hype.. Lacy just was not that good. Although Calzaghe fans will continue to state that their boy ruined him..
Im assuming you were talking to me. Who should Calzaghe have challenged at LH, and be fair and realistic of who he could get between 98-02? If those names are American, what had Calzaghe done to make his Risk/Reward beneficial for them to host him, if Calzaghe would come? If they had a belt, being American, they could get Roy anytime they wanted. Why fight Calzaghe? If it's DM you are talking about, then why does Roy make a fight with the unknown Calzaghe, who has just managed to beat DM in Germany, for the unrecognised WBO title? When he couldnt make the fight with DM himself, who was both known and a more than decent following in the States? It was you who brought up Pav, a HBO backed name in American Boxing, in comparisson to a stay at home Euro Showtime bit part player. And then write accusingly that Calzaghe could have had a fight of similar magnitude to HOp-Pav if he wanted to??. Against who? Unless of course you simply dont rate Calzaghe at all, and assume Roy didnt aswell, and feel a Calzaghe fight would be nothing more than a walk in the park and Jones would have jumped at the chance to fight Calzaghe. And rival TV companyies would bow and let this one sided obvious mismatch take place for the amount of money needed to placate both sides.
Half of the American experts commented on Calzaghe good power. One mention Calzaghe is fast. This is why America cannot be respected, the same America which is high on Chris Arreola right now.
