I thought the three-way was with Superman, Lois and Jimmy Olsen. On Louis vs. Holmes. I could see Larry leading by a wide-margin, then getting caught late, but recover to win a solid decision.
Louis's right hand would do the job. I imagine Holmes gets up in points but eventually Louis would track him down and find the chin. Holmes always had problems with right hand punchers
Billy Conn. If my left hand was only a little harder, and 2" longer, I cruise in like Bogie on Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca.
This content is protected If you could box with Joe Louis he would kill you - and that's what Larry Holmes did - and he would be a sitting duck IMO - with Louis you either had to be jack-rabbit quick and run like a fox a la Billy Conn or you had to be the crouching swarming brawler - Larry was neither of the two - Holmes was a textbook classic boxer - just the type Joe would do a number on - Larry didn't have the punch to make Louis respect him either - of all the greats Holmes would be the one I see Louis showcasing his skills against and really shining - Louis by KO in about 8 rounds
Larry's hands did always drop a bit mid-way through a bout. Usually round 7 or 8. But his recuperative skills, second to none. We do tend to use Joe's bout with Billy Conn I, as a blueprint.
Since when was a prime Holmes not jack-rabbit quick? He was one of the fastest heavyweights of all time in his prime, and faster than anyone Louis fought.
Larry Holmes was no-where near as quick as say the 1941 Billy Conn or a Bob Paster or a Lee Ramage - and as far as quickness of hand I'd say even the sharpshooting 1936 Schmeling and even someone like Tommy Farr was nippier around the ring and - I'd 100% definately rate Ezzard Charles as a much quicker fighter than Holmes too and I'd give the edge to Walcott over Holmes in terms of speed of hand and feet and elusiveness - Holmes was not slow but in terms of being a 6'3" 213pounder he just wasn't going to have the speed of these little guys who could run rings around you and tie you up in knots - these guys were too quick and nippy which threw the programmed Louis off his stride whereas with Holmes, Louis would have the speed advantage whether we're talking generally physically or 110% no doubt in terms of handspeed
Holmes definitely was, especially his main weapon..his jab. Holmes in the first Shavers, Ali, and Cooney fights showed a tremendous amount of speed, imo, more speed than Joe Louis ever showed. [yt]9nELwqtg5Rc[/yt] [yt]0hlXxeCTUp8[/yt] [yt]fw-RRjxmrRA[/yt]
I can't believe the hate for Holmes in this fight. Holmes was bigger faster, longer, and a better boxer with a better chin than Louis. Joe had a big punch, but I can't see him landing enough to take Larry out. He was too slow of foot to box with Larry, too. I think there would be a big difference between Louis fighting very good 180-190lb fighters and a great 210 lb fighter. I see Louis getting stopped late.
I think Louis would KO Holmes. Schmeling is the only downside to the career of a prime Louis. However losing to Schmeling is not exactly the worst blotch on a record. My only problem I see for Louis, is Larry Holmes never folds. Louis could throw everything at Holmes, but unless he separates Holmes from his consciousness, Holmes will keep fighting strong. Just look at Tyson vs Holmes. When Holmes had the life beat out of him, and had very little left, and was almost gone, he STILL employs a strategy. If you watch him in the 4th, he gets hurt and starts leaning to his side, exaggerating the effect of the punches, Tyson invites himself on the inside to go for the kill, and Holmes launches a huge uppercut that JUST missed Tyson. It might have changed the momentum of the fight if it had landed. Holmes tries it once more I think to no avail, and then it's over. Only a legendary fighter can do something like that. Louis would have to land that ONE punch to knock him out, because he will not hurt Holmes, or stop him from boxing effectively. Personally I think he would land it, but wouldn't be too surprised if he didn't
Joe did set a record for fighting 'white pastie guys', something like '18' in a row. You have to love Joe Louis, but Larry may have the goods here.
Holmes UD or possible TKO. Louis had trouble with jabbers and movers. Holmes has a A+ chin and never fought stupid, unlike Walcott and Conn who had Louis beat.
