Nobody ever stopped Larry Holmes in his regular run. And only hurt a few times in his regular run career. Joe Louis loss to Max Schmeling would be like Larry get KO'd by Mike Weaver or before his title by (Roy Williams or Earnie Shavers). Joe didn't only lose, he got battered.
Some do forget, Joe was not only counted out, but he was on the canvas for another 20-seconds after the 10-count, and had to be helped to his feet. Even after the 10th round, when he walked back to the corner, he was wobbling on shaky legs.
Firstly, it is more than a stretch to compare Mike Weaver to Max Schmeling. Secondly, Holmes was still fighting oponents with loosing records at the stage of his career when Louis was matched with Schmeling. Thirdly, did Holmes ever beat an oponent as good as Schmeling?
Why don't we compare the rankings of their opponents when they fought them instead of their skin colour? By that measure, Joe pisses on Larry from a great height. Which do you think is more important?
He was coming off a career ending win over a 28 year old #1 ranked contender. Shouldn't this be taken into account?
Larry and Joe would have tremendous amount of respect for eachother no matter the outcome This content is protected
WHAT WERE YOU SAYING ABOUT NO SPARE TYRE?? This content is protected This content is protected oh and Larry looks really ripped here doesn't he This content is protected
How was he a better boxer? Louis is ahead on inside fighting skills, for example. Louis has a better straight right, a better left hook, better uppercuts, better combinations, and better punching technique (hence more power). He feinted better than Larry too. The only things Holmes is better at are the jab (only just, Louis had a very good jab too) and footwork (the obvious weakness of Louis). On speed, only Holmes' jab and footwork is quicker. Joe's combinations are quicker than Larry's. As for size, Louis did his best against the big fighters, he was renowned for demolishing much bigger guys then Holmes. I think you need to watch a bit more Joe Louis fight footage.
Anyone can find pictures of Larry with a spare tire post 1982 , however, he didn't get that spare until he was past his best and weighing in the 220s. This content is protected This content is protected
Holmes in his late 20's, around the time of the Norton fight looked pretty fit.. This content is protected
Larry did look physically fit versus Mike Weaver, though reports were, that he half-trained for that bout, expecting 'Hercules' to fall in 5 or 6.
I'm not sure if he half trained for that fight, I know he had a cold in it, which you can hear in his voice directly after the fight.
That was the pre-fight report. Larry looked very good in my eyes. Of course, that could have been the post-fight report too, because Mike gave Larry one tough battle.
