What has any of the above have to do with a " prime " Holmes fighting a " prime " Marciano? You want to criticise Holmes for being almost 2 years out of the ring and losing at 38 to a prime Tyson, but give a free pass to Marciano beating a tired 38 year old Joe Louis ( I'll probably get McVey on my case now for disrespecting his beloved Joe Louis ) and an even older Walcott, not to mention Archie Moore. Talk about double standards. By the time those poor saps were in there with Marciano they were literally speaking unfit to carry Holmes's jock. Their best days were well behind them.
Here let's play devil's advocate and and we'll just accept your assertion .. doesn't have to be exactly on point .. just has to be another person's contention with players of our choice. Janitor doesn't believe that size has to matter between Holmes versus Marciano while Janitoralterego (after reading your posts) doesn't believe that size needs to matter for Golovkin versus Marciano. Yep, no doubt about it. Golovkin beats Marciano. The size differential is irrelevant. Several have posted to that effect. The man has better technique, an iron chin, he beats up heavyweights in the gym, and if 188 lb Marciano was in front of him he'd stomp him pillar to post with cleaner hard shots and bust him up. Just a different level of talent. At 173 or 175 lbs, Golovkin can "KO ANY MAN AT ANY WEIGHT!" Yep. Thank you ... Perry's of Wisdom: "Golovkin is not losing to any fighter just because they are bigger." "Hitting very hard requires the ability to put ones body weight behind the punch. Some fighters have this ability most do not. Golovkin certainly does. Gennedy could Ko any man at any weight." That's what we're saying ... I'm sold Could be a 188 lb linebacker - instead of a 240 - 248 lber - don't know why they are all one size in the pros when they could merely be 188? Could be a 188 lb post player - instead of a 240+ lber on average - don't know why they are all of such dimensions when 188 is all you need to bump and battle under the boards with big men? Could be a 188 lb heavyweight today - because a 160 lber can KO ANY MAN ON THE PLANET AT ANY WEIGHT IF HE KNOWS HOW TO SHIFT HIS WEIGHT (LMAO) OR HAS GOD-GIVEN POWER (LMAO) - don't know why there aren't any in today's era? ah the mysteries ...
Lets not be mistaken while Marciano could fight an attrition fight and grind you down he had tremendous one punch power. Shavers had one punch power but could not do the later. Shavers was not a finisher Marciano was. Shavers was no giant about 6' but fizzled and lacked stamina, Marciano had power until the last rd. Many average fighters got off the floor or seriously hurt to beat Earnie and there were many guys who had been KO'd often that Shavers could not stop, so while it was gallant of Larry it was not unprecedented, he went down hard but Earnie was empty to add the 2 fighters who gave Larry hell were the 6" ft Shaver and the 5"10 Tyson add that to the 5'10 Nick Wells 2x amateur KO's of Larry and it may be suggested that Larry had trouble with shorter men that could punch but of all of them Marciano had the late power and could do more than just punch
Halford. You wasted a lot of time writing a very bad post. Weight differences count plenty at lower weight divisions. The reason we have weight divisions is for the lower weights. Weight means much less in the heavyweight ranks especially when you are talking all time great talents. Ali at a bit over 210 beats everyone. Louis around 200 beats just about everyone. Marciano at 187 beats just about everyone. Holmes at 210 beats just about everyone. Etc. These are all very top level talents here.
Marciano beating Louis was not as bad as Holmes beating Ali, Louis had still only lost 2 times and was beating top contenders. Holmes would have lost earlier than he vs the green Tyson had he fought the best of his era or rematched tough fights. Charles and Walcott were both well conditioned and skilled men and Moore was on his best win streak and beat some major Heavyweights, they beat the younger bigger men and all had very high ring IQ's and power, check the stats
Foxy. As soon as I read any poster emphasizing size in the hwt division I immediately know they have plenty to learn. Guess what? McCall sparred Tyson with big gloves, headgear, and at times McCall wore body padding. It was a sparring session not a real bout no matter how intense. Marciano hit like a hammer. No one is standing with his hands down taking his punches. No one.
Shavers knocked Holmes down but he couldn't keep him there because Holmes is not Ellis or Norton, neither is he an exlhvy past prime, or a near 40 years old Walcott or Moore. He has a better chin than those three ,and wonderful recuperative powers if he is tagged, maybe the best ever for a heavyweight. Shavers has 68 kos nealy 20m more than Rocky had fights. I think he was a finisher and I think he hit harder than Marciano. I'd be willing to bet a few quid Don C*ckell wouldn't go any 9 rounds with him. Holmes v Tyson? Do you know what, I'm not even going to give that the credibility of a response. .Nick Wells whom you keep trumpeting was a southpaw ,he fought absolutely nothing like Marciano. Plus this was way back when they were amateurs. Or do you want me to say Larry Holmes would have beaten the sh*t out of Coley Wallace? BTW Wallace was 6' 2" and he beat Marciano does this mean Marciano had trouble with taller men? NB Wallace was kod in 4 of his 7 pro losses yet Rocky couldn't do it when they were amateurs ,does this mean he couldn't punch? See how nonsensical this line of argument is? Below is Felix Savon blowing out David Tua in one round in the amateurs. This obviously proves conclusively that Tua had a glass jaw. https://uk.search.yahoo.com/yhs/sea...=yhs-btyuser&type=bt_tier_c/bt_dial/bt_access
Holmes would utterly dominate and destroy Marciano. Mismatch. Marciano is a 50s Lucian Bute. Padded record with no-hopers.
Marciano was a great fighter who was proven in the fire against the best available competition of his era. He had two fisted late power,a very good chin, tremendous determination and self belief, with the ability to ignore pain and an unparalled work ethic that meant he was always in better condition than his opponents. His physical disadvantages, and his style of fighting meant that his career would never be a long one and he was smart enough to know when to hang them up. A beast in the ring, and a quiet unassuming gentleman outside it. As his few commentaries proved ,he could have carved himself another post retirement career as a perceptive boxing an*lyst. It is a great pity that he was not blessed with more years to enjoy a life that he had sacrificed so much for.
Whether you either agree, or like the fact that Tyson knocked over or out dozens of sparring partners during his career is of no consequence to me at all. What he didn't do was knock McCall over or out with a head shot. And YES McCall could comfortably drop his hands and let Marciano hit him, and just smirk at the punches. The fact is Tyson " was " what you and all the other Marciano freakishly fanatical followers have in your revisionist version of him. Which is why on a similar thread ( Tyson v Marciano ) plenty had Tyson to stop Marciano inside a few rounds at most.
The reality is Marciano fought 5 men in world title fights who AT THAT STAGE OF THEIR RESPECTIVE CAREERS would have been blown away by every legitimate world champion from Liston onward's, and from Tyson onward's would have been considered as nothing more than cannon fodder to pad records. Much like Ali was v Holmes and Berbick.
I am now Hulk Hogan, 40 years ago I was a bit different . But I've never been a wannabee Rambo, putting up,pics of myself. What happened to the career in Navy Seals?
Years ago I belonged to several boxing gyms. One in Hackettstown NJ was my primary haunt. My main thrust is in terms of hwt boxing history. I've watch most recorded bouts since the Jeffries era many times over since the 70s. With Marciano I never bothered watching in any depth his bout since I believed those around me that he was not very good. Once I sat down to watch him I saw something quite different. Although I still say Foreman would Ko Rocky early he would be a challenge for any other hwt champion. The guy was the real deal.
