Lee/Duddy rejected potential opportunity to face Macklin

According to Brian Peters, he would have made Andy Lee vs John Duddy at the beginning of 2011 and the winner would have faced Matt Macklin. He sent a written offer to both fighters, which included the incentive of a six figure sum for each fight. They both rejected the offer. According to Peters, the indications from both sides was that they would be happy to face each other, but the proposed Macklin fight was the stumbling block.

“The offer was for Andy and John to meet on a proposed date at the beginning of 2011 in Ireland with the winner to meet Matthew Macklin in their next fight. Both fights would have been live on RTÉ and the offer to each fighter was for a six figure sum with the winner to receive a further six figure sum to fight Matthew so from a financial point of view it was certainly quite lucrative and above and beyond the type of purses that they could command for any other fight right now.”

“The indications I received from both sides were that they were interested in fighting each other but the prospect of the winner having to fight Macklin as part of the deal seemed to be the stumbling block,” said Peters.

There is a good chance Lee V Macklin will happen next year. Not sure about Duddy V Macklin. In any case - it was a 2 fight deal and the timing conflicts with Emmanuel Stewards promise for Lee to have a big fight in March.

 

Unless it's one of the title holders or Pavlik, it won't be a bigger fight, so who do you think it will be?

 

That's a damn shame, 2 great fights in Ireland being missed out on here, the winner would have been huge here and could definitely have used this as a spring board to a world title fight.

 

Macklin will just have to find another way to american tv.

If Lee doesn't get that big fight, he will look a complete joke. Martinez' manager has already said Lee isn't even on his radar (and rightfully so). I just can't see how this big fight is going to come off, I thought the big fight would be against someone like Macklin and now we find out he refused a perfect 2 fight deal to put him right in line for a shot at the top dog of the division next Summer.

 

The fights would be good for Irish boxing but Macklin should not be messing about with fighters such as Lee and Duddy.

 

I think he should. It's continued preparation towards a world title shot, and he can make a name for himself a bit in the US should be beat the winner of or both of those. Lee would be the better preparation but Duddy is probably the bigger name in the US I would assume.

I see what you mean though, he's 28 now so whilst not old, he's at the sort of age where he should be fighting for world titles or at least looking for eliminators. But I'm still a bit worried about his preparation. He's a very good fighter but it's a whole 'nother level he's going to be stepping up. Asikainen and Jomardashvili isn't adequate preparation to be going into a world title fight.

He needed the Barker fight to have come off. I'm still hopeful that will happen as I really wanted to see it and the winner will be in good shape to challenge for a belt of some sort. Failing that, he should probably be looking at guys like David Lopez or Lajuan Simon.

 

Yeah good fight to build a reputation in the States but I don't see Duddy putting Macklin in anywhere he hasn't been. Shame these fights didn't come off would of been great to see some of the top Irish fighters go against each other doesn't happen too often for us.

 

What?? Lee is better than anyone that Macklin has ever fought - that includes Jamie Moore!

I reckon Lee beats both but opinions don't really matter until we see some evidence.

Everyone should note that the winner of duddy v lee on a big top rank card in MSG would render a fight with Macklin pointless because nobody in the states knows who macklin is. the winner of duddy v lee, assuming its a good action fight and one of them perhaps ends it, which is quite obviously Lee imo, he can get another equal sized or greater pay day than RTE could ever offer in america.


Another fact to consider is that Brian Peters has a financial interest in Macklin as his manager or something, that he doesnt have in lee or duddy
