Lennox Lewis is overrated. It’s no question when people say prime Lennox Lewis can beat every heavyweight in the 90s when he was at his absolute best from 1997 to 2001, but they ignore the fact that that would mean he’s fighting everybody out of their best—Riddick Bowe, Evander Holyfield, and Mike Tyson.
If we go back to them, when they were all around the same age—20, 21, 22. There is no argument that Riddick Bowe was a better fighter than Lennox Lewis in ’92. There’s no question that Evander Holyfield was a better fighter than Lennox Lewis in ’92. There’s no question that Mike Tyson was a better fighter than Lennox Lewis in 1991 or 1992.
The problem with prime Lennox Lewis is that it’s always going to involve him fighting somebody when they’re not at their absolute best compared to him, since he was a late bloomer in the boxing world.

I think he was good but he did get beat up by Vitali and retired early as a result. But then again Vitali is an ATG.

Either way, would not rank him above the Klitschko bros

Lennox was older than Tyson, so the prime argument doesn't hold weight for me. He was also in prison in 1992. Riddick Bowe famously threw his belt in the bin rather than fight Lennox. Lennox also stopped him in the Olympic final. While it was a premature stoppage, the 2nd round was a blueprint on how he would stop him. Bowe didn't want anything to do with Lennox because of how hard he hit. He knew it with headgear on, and that's why he never seriously tried to make the fight happen in the pro ranks.

There's a difference between having a couple of great years and actually beating every contender of your era. Bowe was losing to Golota pretty easily before Golota got DQ'd - Lennox blew him away in 1 round. Holyfield was outboxed twice by Lennox and got a gift draw in one of them. They tried to make the Tyson fight multiple times as far back as 1996. Tyson paid him $4 million in step-aside money so he could fight Seldon. He then chose to fight Holyfield after Seldon and didn't honour this step-aside deal, and got smashed from pillar to post. Lewis had to take him to court; they're not the actions of someone who thinks they are better than you.

Lennox Lewis is underrated, if anything. I can't see how anyone wouldn't have him in the top 10 HW of all time. I have him in the top 5. He beat every single contender of his era, avenged all of his losses, and he is also an Olympic gold medalist. He also beat Vitali via TKO after smashing his eye to pieces with one of the best uppercuts of his career, even when he was on the slide. There hasn't been a better heavyweight since.

I think he was during the Wlad years. Not now.

In like 2010 you had an unholy alliance of Tyson fans and the British hype machine who considered Lennox the HW GOAT. In the years since the British kinda abandoned Lennox to promote Fury and Joshua as the greatest. Tyson fans discovered in the social media world you don't have to actually make sense and they can just shamelessly excuse all of Tysons losses. Lennox is no longer needed as a proxy for either interest group to advance their agenda. Lennox has kinda turned from neo Ali into neo Holmes over the past 15 years.

I think he may have even been underrated at one time, or rather unpopular, which some confuse with underrated. Today, he's highly overrated. This is because his resume is better than he is. If you remember his fights, you know he wasn't even close to what that considers him to be today: a top-five fighter of all time.

Hokeyfield, Tyson, and Vitali look great on record, but watch those fights and you'll see they were much weaker than the average fan thinks.

For some reason, Lennox was never in the top five in P4P at his absolute peak. Bowe was, Tyson was, Holy was, the Klitschko brothers were... Lewis managed his career brilliantly, but in the ring, he's nowhere near as impressive as he appears on paper.

I used to think he was quite a bit overrated.
I now think he’s perhaps slightly overrated.
I’ve seen a few posts putting him as a lock in for top 3 or 4 best ever heavyweight, which I think is overrated him somewhat

ATG’s don’t call up other fighters and plead with them to take out your biggest challenge and payday. I think he definitely is overrated.

Very good fighter definitely. But not as good as many of his fans or he thinks he is

Im a fan of Lewis and rate him highly but my one gripe is he never gave Mercer a rematch .Slightly off topic but Bowe gets rightly slated for binning the belt to avoid Lewis, but I can’t be the only one thinking that had that fight happened it would have been a classic and imo at that time would have been a genuine 50/50 fight ! Am I also the only one thinking that Bowe is under rated by a lot of people ?

I think he's about about right. He came out on top of the 90s, the second golden era of heavyweight boxing, and if he didn't get tyson and Holy at their best, he got them when he could get them, and beat Vitali to boot.

To me, the McCall fight was a Don Kind stoppage. Really, only Rahmen mars his record, and everyone has something...
