They both signed the contract. Excuses always bothered me when fighters bring them up, and I know McCall was freaking out right before our eyes in the ring with Foreman feeling really bad. We all felt bad. But to take the win away from Lennox? I don't know if that is fair.

It was a win but I guess technically Lewis didn't beat him, it was a win on a technicality.

    Of course he beat him.

    A win is a win.

There is not much to question about it.

    A bit of context here:

After the WBC title became vacant, Lewis was the #1 WBC contender, and McCall was the #2 WBC contender.

Taking this fight was clearly the only way forward for Lewis at the time, so we can't criticize him on that count.

In July of 1996 McCall was arrested for possession of crack cocaine, and in August he entered a drug rehabilitation center.

In December 1996, McCall attacks a Chrismas tree, and ends up back in rehab.

McCall's problems were clearly well documented before the fifth.

The fight takes place in February of 1997, and you know what happens.

After the fight, Dino Duva says that he tried to get McCall replaced, but that Don King wasn't having it.

In April 1997 McCall is sectioned.

That's not even remotely close to what happened.

thing is, being mental was part of 100% McCall. so actually it was him. part of the deal with Oliver is his inconsistency and drug habits, part of his character that ultimately make-up his ability as a boxer.

The guy who beat Lewis first time had the same character.

suppose at the end of the day Lewis did what he set out to, and that's beat mccall. But for me personally there was a feeling of not seeing the fight I was hoping for. Mccall having the issue s he had, he could never have brought 100 per cent of him self to the fight, it wasn't the same mccall in his own mind from the first fight. I wanted to see Oliver and Lewis both trying to win, mccall getting a second win or Lewis avenging, but not in the
Manner it actually ended. It wasn't Lewis destroying a fully capable man in front of him, so it did take a little of the shine off the victory. In a nut shell, Lewis did the job but not against the atomic bull I wanted to see.

He shouldn't get blamed either. He did his part in preparing for the fight and turned up on the day as ready as he could be, it wasn't his fault McCall was having a breakdown and shouldn't have been anywhere near the ring. Lewis's camp had raised concerns about McCall when he was arrested the previous December for going nuts in a lobby but Don King refused to pull McCall out and insisted he would be ready. Lewis could only fight what they put in front of him and couldn't be held responsible for the state of his opponent.

Lewis looked as confused as every spectator dealing with McCall that night. It's not his fault.

Shame on Don King for putting McCall in the ring.

Not really. I generally don't believe in lucky punches. That punch McCall landed was about as close to being a "lucky punch" as I`ve seen in boxing. Anyway Lewis avenged his defeat. He did what he was supposed to do.
