He's up there! He's up there! Yep... but that is changing my friend -and fast. We are riding the crest of a new era. Heavyweights are getting Primo sized -but with more speed and coordination. And while I do believe the LHW division is the cut-off point for objective power (in other words it takes an exceptional SMW and below to take down a HW), it doesn't bode well for Dempsey. Or Marciano. After a certain point, things like height, reach, and functional weight are more likely to make THE difference.
You wanna tell me that those 30 suckers Dempsey KO'd in the first round with records of 0-0-0 were all world beaters?
They almost certainly wernt fighters with actual records of 0-0-0 whatever they were. My point is that Dempsey had numerous fights against the top contenders of his era while VK didnt. So Klitschko has a huge knockout percentage. Big deal so did Frank Bruno. It dosnt make him one of the greatest punchers or finishers of all time. It is more a reflection on his competition. The same holds true for Foreman to a much lesser extent.
If guys like McCall or Rahman could take advantage of those shaky whiskers, the Manassa Mauler would have Lewis out of there in rather short order!
If guys like Tunney and Carpentier could stun Dempsey with a right hand, imagine would Lewis's right would do. Just saying, it's not that simple, they both have the power to knock the other out. They had such drastically different styles, weights, eras they fought it, and pretty much everything else that I honestly can't decide who would win. Even if someone had a gun to my head. They're also two of my top 5 H2H heavyweights of all time.
I don't. But anyone who has boxed will know that a 190 pounder will not hit as hard as a natural 220 pounder. The fact that 90% of the hardest punchers in history are over 200 pounds is no coincidence.
Yes but the hardest puncher in history.......Earnie Shavers was only 6'0 205lb.......not exactley big.
So, was he over 200 pounds or not? And it's not like Shavers is head and shoulders over others (on those lists, that is).
I tend to look at it the other way. Lennox Lewis is clearly up there with the hardest punchers of all time but he dosnt seem to be an order of magnitude above, Shavers, Liston, Louis, or perhaps even Marciano and Satterfield. Despite his weight advantage.
