Not all Dempsey's 1rd ko victims were 0-0-0 Porky Flynn had 96 and 97 fights . Jim Flynn 89. Homer Smith 24 Miller 48 Morris 59 Fulton 50.
The size difference is extreme. p4p I think most people would have Dempsey ahead, but in a matchup my head would be with Lennox and my heart would sympathize with Dempsey. I wouldn't be shocked if Dempsey got a KO, but a UD or even SD WOULD surprise me, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him suffer a ko at the hands of LENNOX.
I agree. For me it defies logic. Perhaps if it were on a road or if perhaps it was for say 1/4-1/2 mile it would be plausible but 9 miles ..nope. I watch the world strongest men competition fairly regularly and these guys are big, ie in the 300lb+ range and I seriously doubt any of them could do this, and they train full time for strength competitions, much of it is also a test of endurance.
dempsey ko within 5 rounds -the bigger the better for dempsey ---no i take it all back dempsey slaughters him within 4
Lewis wears him down and puts him down. Dempsey feasted on bigger opponents but he never met one as skilled physically or technically as Lewis.
Lewis by murder. Comparing the best super heavy to a guy who wouldn't even be considered a big cruiser these days will result in only one outcome - an early stoppage for Lewis
Fred Fulton was aparently a verry technicaly adept big man. In setting forth his belief that Fulton is sure to beat Willard, Fulton's manager gave sixteen reasons for thinking his man will win: 1. He is as fast on his feet as a lightweight. 2. He can outbox any heavyweight. 3. He has a straight left that no heavyweight of the present time can block. 4. If necessary he can dance around any heavyweight in the business for hours. 5. He has a knockout punch in either hand. 6. He has twenty-nine clean knockouts to his credit. 7. He never had a black eye or bloody nose. 8. He is of Scotch-Irish parentage. 9. His height is six feet four and one-half inches. 10. His reach is eight-four and one-half inches. 11. His weight is 220 pounds. 12. He is twenty-three years old. 13. He is an all around athlete. 14. He never chewed, smoked or drank. 15. He is positively sure no man in the world can beat him. 16. On the 14th of May, 1915, he beat with ease Jess Willard, present champion of the world, and knocked him down in the second round, something Jack Johnson couldn't do in twenty-six rounds. Alas there is no film of him to validate these asertions but it sounds like he was a fighter in the mould of the recent crop of big heavyweights. I also think that if Fulton was fighting today he could well come in at 230 or 240 lbs.
I would tend to think a Modern Super Heavy like Lewis would beat Dempsey basically because of reach and power. The wild card is that I always hear early generation fighters were incredibly strong and naturally more powerful than today's fighters? It is proven from research thar our Great Grandfathers had twice as much sperm the current generation of males have. Does that mean that Fighters of the 1920's were twice as good as current fighters? It is hard to compare fighters between eras, maybe boxers are more effective with efficient fire-trigger muscles of Dempsey than hulking weight lifting muscles of Lewis. Never heard of a an ex-NFL'er or body builder who was a good boxer. The more ripped and muscular Mike Tyson got the worst he got. Big is not Better in Boxing -> that has been proven.
Lewis KO1, better P4P boxer and allot bigger. He could give Dempsey free shots if he felt like it and laugh at his feeble girly punches
Yup, people often say that size doesn't matter in matchups like these but when the height/reach advantage is so severe, it must be mentioned.
