I think I gave Lewis appropriate props but he never did get off the floor to win and Louis did. While Lewis fought some bigger guys I cant really say they hit harder than some of Louis's foes.

JL fought many slick and accurate punchers as well as brawlers, big and small. Joe did have trouble with those who crowded him but he usually figured them out as well as all styles the 2nd time around.

Like I said Lennox was an offensive beast but not without flaws, he was KO'd and pretty much finished in the McCall fight and I am glad the RSC so Lennox could fight another day, I was sick at the time because Lennox was the guy I was rooting for.

I dont consider McCall or Rahman elite punchers and a bit slow both, Louis was fit as a fiddle, he came in at 230+ when he KO'd Nino Valdes in 1 in an Exhibition but made sure he dropped 20+ lbs for a real fight.

Lennox in my top 5 based on offensive prowess but Louis # 1 based on everything he was and did IMO

Janitor is one of the people here who I always ignore. One of the most clueless people here. One of these guys who lives in the past trying to build up yester year fighters. Joe Louis for the most part fought 180 pound fighters.

You can named the Buddy and Max Baers and the Abe Simons of the worldswho were all bums mind you. But Baer killed a guy in the ring so that must of ment he was a good figher and hit hard? Well Foreman, Lewis, or Tyson never killed anybody so that must of ment they didn't hit hard right?

Who the **** did Max Baer ever beat who was considered a great heavyweight. I don't mean some mob controlled fighter like Primo Carnera or some 180 pound cruiserweight.

Hassim Rahman would of dominated Joe Louis era and if you say he wouldn't you are a freaking idiot.

If Rahman landed flush on Louis he wouldn't have gotten up period. McCall would of knocked Louis out as well.

Lewis chin wasn't closed to being great but it was pretty damn solid. As countless people stated he took hard punches through out his career and walked through but because 2 230 pound guys dropped him he has a bad chin?

Yet 190 pound Max Schmelling knocked Louis out. Tony Galento a fat no talent slob had Louis on his ass. Light punching Billy Conn was able to hurt Louis badly but you say Lewis can't take a punch?

Get the hell out of here. Lennox Lewis is light years better than Louis or anything he fought.

That is why we need to classis forums. 1 for people like Janitor who has no clue to what he is talking about but loves his 1900s boxers. Then 1 for people who know what they are talking about.

If Louis was out of camp shooting a film in Vegas, If Louis's trainer was too busy preparing Hamed for Barrera to focus on Louis and If Louis had not adjusted to the altitude of 5,500 feet after 2 weeks training (the time Lewis had) he would have not.

    THAT is the bottom line.

over 3 fights 2-1 either way with lewis winning the first & louis the second, cant see either going 3-0.

there are good reasons to pick either man really,

That is a very far reaching assumption, based on very limited evidence.

The most emotional fans of a given fighter will often try to transfer their worst loss onto other ATGs, which is wrong.

If Lewis lost to Rahman then that is his problem and nobody elses.

Judge Louis by his own losses and mistakes.

    Hamed vs Barrera 7th April
Lewis vs Rahman 22nd of April

Steward focused on preparing Hamed and joined Lewis afterwards, that's a fact.
Just over a week before the fight he was filming Oceans 11, that's a fact:
"However, rumours from the gym in Las Vegas suggested otherwise and, when Lewis stupidly arrived in Johannesburg just 10 days before the fight, it was obvious from his flabby appearance that he had not prepared correctly.
Rahman had been in South Africa for three weeks when it was reported that Lewis was on the set of Ocean's 11 in Las Vegas with Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt."

Lewis weighed 253lbs, the heaviest of his career.

No far reaching assumptions at all.

Under those circumstances Rahman ko's Louis, and I'll add most other ATG's who would prepare the same.

There is always some sort of excuse that emerges after a champion looses under these circumstances. You can mitigate this kind of loss, but you can't wipe it away. My thinking is that every ATG has a worst moment that is unique to them.

Tyson fans try to claim that James Douglas would have beaten anybody else in Tokyo.

    No he wouldn't.

By the same token, Lewis is probably the only top 10 all time heavyweight that Rahman would have beaten that day.

The equivalent fight in Louis's career is not the Schmeling fight, or the Conn fight, it is actualy the first Arturo Godoy fight, which gets overlooked because he managed to hang on to the title.

It's not an excuse when it's documented but don't get me wrong, no-one else is to blame but Lewis and his management.
I'm just saying under those exact circumstances coming into a fight Louis wouldn't fair too well.
Add to this Louis was knocked down or hurt by lighter hitting opponents in his prime, imagine what a hungry hard hitting Rahman would do to a pooly trained Louis.

After a few cagey rounds that are hard to split, Lewis manages to catch him with a peach of a left hook/right hand thanks to his superior reach. Louis goes down hard and gets back up, but Lennox piles on the pressure and the ref jumps in to save a brave Louis from being pounded against the ropes. Lennox Lewis TKO7.

I don't dispute that the events leading up to the fight were as you say they were, I just don't think they are adequate grounds to dismiss the event as an aberation.

We should not be in the business of handing out pardons here.

The only excuse that should ever carry that sort of weight, should be a fighter being significantly outside their prime.

Even then you have to ask to what extent the end of their prime was self inflicted, since Louis and Lewis didn't loose focus, but continued beating the best fighters around untill their bodies becaume to old.

Lennox would dominate with the jab before putting Joe away in around 6 very 1 sided rounds

When did Louis ever take such a punch with his chin in the air? This isn't a blown up LHW Schmelling

He was twice KO'd by crusers
