I agree, except if u recall, Futch said of his own fighter Frazier that he had a useless right hand.

I have never heard that before. Joe's left stole the show tho. The right paled in comparison. Leon had a nasty right uppercut that would be detrimental in the infighting Joe himself was so good at.

You're going to have a hard time convincing anyone of this one Will.

I don't see anyone giving me any good arguments why what I say is wrong. The outcome may be wrong, but no one's shown me why. All I've heard is that Joe would blow Leon out in 1-3 rounds. But when has Joe ever blown out a decent heavyweight out in 1-3 rounds? In the 70s, every heavy Joe faced lasted four or more rounds. In 1981, in Joe's last fight w/ Cummings, the last time he knocked out a heavy in 3 or less was Zglewitz in '69. U know Leon was better than him for sure.

Leon was created by television and the media, also the nobodies that he fought. Joe had a more impressive resume, Machen, Jones, Bonavena, Chuvalo, Ramos, Quarry, Foster, Ali, even though he lost twice to him, George Foreman. Leon was relegated to fighting Joe Generic, people that were not dangerous. He hit the jackpot when he fought an already unhealthy Muhammad Ali in 1978.

I agree, Joe was better, but Leon was a great entertainer regardless of the people he fought. Part of the reason Leon earns so much admiration from me is cuz he grew up rough and came out of the St. Louis region of Missouri, my life-long home state. Ask @AwardedSteak863, you'll get a similar message from him. Leon just one of "our" boys over here in MO, just like Zora Folley's one of yours. It's a state pride thing. We also boast Archie Moore, Sonny Liston, and the rest of the Spinks clan where we hail from. You agree with my these sentiments, @AwardedSteak863?

Leon's kind of a state hero.

I personally do agree with the sentiment that Leon is overrated, by boxing "experts" especially, but I have a lot of respect for his consistent desire to fight, which is always a respectable quality. I do feel that he could have made much more of himself, but his wins over Ali, Mercado, and Burnett ultimately make Leon a failure, as much as I hate to say it. I still love the guy tho.

It's not so much that he is overrated, he was talented as hell but his personal demons wrecked his career. The guy that fought in the Olympics and Ali in 78' was a pretty focused and determined guy. He just simply wasn't consistently that guy. He is no different from anyone else in life with a severe substance abuse problem. One other thing to consider is he likely was already suffering from CTE by the early 80's. Remember, he had long amauter career before turning pro and was always more of a swarmer that loved to mix it up.

Well, I meant Leon is overrated in terms in accomplishments. I think he was a really good fighter too. I mean, he was powerful, fast, high-stamina, he could take a good shot, he could move, he had a fair jab. He's the kind of guy that should have more good results on his resume but doesn't, for reasons you mentioned.
