Leonard could have won that first fight if he had only fought the same way...boxed and moved..like he did in the No Mas fight..he helped out Duran considerably by using his heart and not his head that first time. For all the accolades that Duran gets for that 1st Leonard fight, it goes without saying that Leonard just basically lost the fight as much as Duran won it. Heresy, I know.:yep

well boxing is full of guys who "could have" won some fight they lost. some of those guys have like 8-15 records, with all 15 being "could haves".

i think Leonard's performance was scrappy. whether he chose to fight dumb or Duran forced him into it. he was just standing there slapping and scrapping like an alleycat.

I think the fight is grossly overrated. much of the first half was mauling and clinching. I've seen Duran fight more polished at lightweight too.
i'm not saying it wasn't a great fight but it's hardly the classic it's made out to be.
i dont see how SRL at 27-0 and only 2 championship fights is deemed to be the 2nd greatest welter ever. MAYBE when he faced Hearns (and i think that's still a stretch) but not before then.

In his prime, Duran was beaten by one guy, DeJesus, who got the favor returned in spades. If anything, he suffered from the "Jack Johnson Syndrome" of being ill-prepared and over-partying.

If folks are going to start holding against him defeats he incurred two weight divisions above his natural weight and when he was well beyond 30, well they are just proclaiming their collective ignorance.

We could not disagree more. You have your Dempsey-Willard back alley, un-officiated beatdown. I'll take two master warriors applying more skills of the trade the lot of us can count.

    that's where it's overrated.
there were loads of hastily thrown missed punches, slapping ones too (esp. from Leonard). it's grossly overrated.
just watch the highlights posted above. two guys standing on top of each other, throwing tons of punches, missing as many or more than they land. sometimes getting tangled up. and even stumbling at times.
leonard hardly got any power in his punches all night.

it amazes me how people can be seduced so easily by the historical reputations of big name fighters and fail to judge fights as what they are.
    it's the emperor's clothes mentality.

its all very well talking about willard-dempsey being overrated but that's only ever been called a massacre. no one ever called it the height of pugilistic art or the greatest win over a great champion. that's just your fabricated strawman.
