Kingfisher3 does have a point...what is to be gained from personal abuse, simply because somebody has a different opinion from you?

 

He was great, but his career does not have the wins over ATG fighters to say he could beat the best of them. Compete? Possible. Ray Leonard is a case where Roberto was outclassed once Ray fought his fight. Other people say everything Duran did post 1980 was bonus, yet he fought his best fighters post 1980 which would have defined his legacy as the greatest ever had he beaten them. As it turned out he did not.

MAGS, I find your takes very interesting to read and this stuff doesn't rile me up in the least, but I doubt you'd rate Duran any differently. Here he beat an undefeated Leonard but you undermine the accomplishment by saying he just simply didn't fight his fight even though he still held virtually every physical advantage and was more than confident he'd win "fighting Duran's fight."

Those advantages were at a surplus in the case of Hearns and Hagler.

And unlike your typical Duran hugger, I believe Hearns wins 9/10 no matter the version or weight. Do I think Montreal Duran vs 147 Hearns is a whole different ball game and a much more competitive? Absolutely. But Hearns is in my top 5 ATG punchers, could not be outboxed and he'd find Duran's chin eventually (or enough times) with the right to win.
