The 74 Ali is prime? He was already well past his pull-date, sluggish, clowning, clinching taking entire rounds off... All he proved was that he could take a huge shot. Just because he fooled one big oaf into gassing himself does not mean he was anywhere near his prime abilities.
In my initial statement, I gave Ali the edge at his prime. Though I stated by 74, I would give Lewis the advantage.
fooled some big oaf into gassing himself? what? you make It seem like it was a small achievement. it's not. anyone knocking out foreman had got to be a beast. even in retrospect it seems weird to think Ali knocked out foreman. I might have worded it wrong, but my point was that the 74' Ali was still great and wouldve been able to outbox Lewis. he had speed, intelligence, footwork, and decent power. I don't think anyone slaughters this version without a bit of a fight.
Yeah, if it was such a nothing achievement, how come Holyfield (or no one else) could replicate it against an ancient Foreman? Just to give things a bit of perspective: Mercer gave a prime/near prime Lewis hell and possibly beat him, but was comfortably outboxed by a 40+ Holmes. In fact, way past prime versions of both Holmes and Foreman had pretty good success in the 90's. In '74 a 24-year old Holmes was Ali's sparring partner and a 25-year old Foreman his KO victim. But this Ali would somehow be much easier handled by Lewis than Mercer, old Holyfield, Rahman and McCall?
exactly. proving my point that, if Lewis get's KOd by bums and still manages to have big fights with mercer and Holyfield, please tell me how this version beats up Ali so bad? he wouldn't. no body gives a 74' Ali beating. although I think few fighters may be able to beat this version, Ali is not one of them.
Well, the first I can debate a little bit, as that one could go either way. But prime Lewis vs prime Ali.. I'll take Ali.
