I don't know exactly what the scoring criteria was, but my opinion is this: First round: Both tentative, Lewis lands a big left hook after a glancing right, best punch of the round. At the end, Gonzales lands a flurry and Lewis answers with one in return. Close round, i'd give it to Lewis based on that left hook. Second round: much more action, Gonzales gets the better of the jabs, but Lewis lands several hard power punches. I don't know if jabs count as much as power punches do, but i think Lewis landed more clean punches in total as well. Lewis round. Third round: Close one, both land some shots, though my impression was that again, Lewis got through a bit more often than Gonzales did. Also, who was the point taken away from? I probably did miss some shots because of the low video quality, and i don't know the judging criteria nor who the point was taken from, but i thought Lewis got the better of him. By the way, gotta love how Lewis was already showing a pretty dirty, professional style. Hitting in the clinches, when he was low, shoving Gonzales into the ropes, etc.
All scoring blows counted equally in amatuer boxing then, Chris, with an ineffective light flicking jab somehow being the equal of a power punch that rocks one of the fighters. As long as they land with the white part of the glove they're all measured the same as scoring blows. Also, Lewis was the one being penalized there, with the referee calling him for hitting behind the head. As for who deserved the win...I don't know. Tough to see what landed and what didn't on that video. It appeared to be a close fight from what I could make out and with the point deduction possibly being the deciding factor. Who knows, though. Round 1 Lots of wasted motion, and lots of shots falling short or hitting gloves and arms. Gonzalez seemed to be looking to load up on that right a lot, which meant that he rarely fired more than single jabs at a time and not a lot of heavy stuff. Lewis at least was trying to throw the one-two, and seemed to land with more authority. Gonzalez's best shot near the end brought an equally good response from Lewis, and I think his aggression and better offense gives him the nod in an otherwise quiet round. Round 2 Better stuff, Gonzalez now the aggressor and sweeping with with hooks, jabs and body shots. Lewis replying with strong whacks to the body and that right hand over the top. Makes me wish this was a clearer video to tell just how solidly landed the punches in this round were. Both guys seemed to get in good hits, but I'd be tempted to go for Gonzalez here. Round 3 Lewis real wild when he thought he had Gonzalez caught near the start. But the announcers are right, Gonzalez got tired real quick and fatigue served to make Lewis's shots look even better. Not just the impact but Gonzalez not being to shrug them off as well. Kinda scrappy and messy, I do think the point deduction was a bit questionable actually as Gonzalez seemed to be clinging on. Landed a nice right near the end but his tiredness contributed to Lewis's stuff looking heavier and I would give Lewis that round. The point deduction, well, this isn't like the 10 point must scoring system so it shouldn't turn a Lewis round into a 9-9 round after all. So I probably would've gone with Lewis by 2 rounds to 1.
