I did read the interview. He didn't say anything new. Same excuses how referee stopped McCall fight too soon and how Rahman got him with a lucky shot. Ironically, same things happened in Vitali's fight but went the other way. He is saying he had nothing to prove anymore but he did - if not for himself then for boxing fans. If he said before Vitali's fight: "I will retire after this fight no matter what the outcome" - so be it. However, he promised the rematch after the fight, negotiated the rematch for Dec '03 and then bailed out. Whatever excuses he comes up now are irrelevant. He was ready to fight but quit leaving boxing fans trying to duke it out in fantasy boxing world instead.

Lewis reason for not giving vitali a rematch.

Because he had been there, done it and got the t-shirt.

Because he had nothing left to prove in boxing.

Because he was 36 and was going to retire anyway.

That is precisely what I'm saying.

Go look at the workrate Vitali had against Briggs, or against Peter. Same chin. His power isn't quite what it was, but that wouldn't matter. He beats Prime Lewis. In fact, he might even knock Lewis out faster because for part of Lewis' prime he didn't know how to clinch when hurt. Manny Steward taught him that.

Old Vitali beats Prime Lewis. Not 9/10 as he would in both their primes, but he still beats him for the same reasons.

I'm bored of these Lewis/Klitschko threads, who would win in a rematch. why wasn't there a rematch, what would have happened in round 7 etc.

    The Lewis interview is here

if a link hasn't already been posted.

He seems fairly content and if nothing else he's definitely an example of knowing when to get out of boxing.

You're the idiot, and you made the right decision in not responding to me.

Lewis was the right guy, with the right build, at the right time. Faded former cruiserweight Holyfield, shot Tyson. Coward Bowe. Mentally unstable McCall. Lewis ducked Sanders. Ducked Wlad. Lucked out against Vitali. Got starched by Rahman and McCall.

Lennox had talents, and he got better as time went on, but he knew he met his match with Vitali and got out at the right time. Smart man. Not as smart as the Ph.D. Klitschkos, of course, but wise nonetheless.

The difference between Lennox and Vitali can be boiled down to one made match and one avoided match: Lennox never wanted any part of Sanders, for obvious reasons; when Vitali saw Sanders destroy his brother, he couldn't get the Sanders fight soon enough.

Lennox was a coward in a bully's body. Vitali is a bully in a bully's body. When Lennox looked into the abyss of Vitali's soul, he knew that reality, and got out in one piece after his victory in the "cut lottery." And after Vitali manhandled him for 6 rounds, cut face and all.

I can sympathize with Lewis, he was planning on retiring and he took this last fight not really giving a **** since he just made a bunch of money fighting Tyson. He wins the fight by TKO even though it's cuts and everybody keeps asking him to rematch, but he's just mentally done. He's gotten all the money he wanted, all the fame and beating Vitali again wouldn't really do much for his legacy anyways

I always get tired of hearing this bunk about how someone got lucky. Fighters make their own luck by throwing the punch(es).

I remember Paz stopping Rosenblatt when he was cut and behind on points. "You got lucky" "Lucky? It was only the fourth round!"

FACT: Lewis was in the worse shape of his career when he fought Vitali
FACT: He ripped Vitali's face to shreds

Now someone close the ****ing thread. If VITLAY was that good he'd have beaten old Lewis, and that burns the **** out of the Klit lovers.

    As for Lewis ducking WALDO.....:patsch:patsch:patsch

How do you explain the fact the Vitali hit Lewis with everything but the kitchen sink for 6 rounds, and only had him hurt once, in the second?

How do you explain that Lewis, supposedly china chinned, was barely even bothering to defend against Vitlay for the last couple of rounds, willingly taking 2 to land 1?

And Briggs might not be the best example to use. Briggs had his hands at his sides, and still went the distance. You may remember a much, much better version of Briggs spending more time on the canvas than van gogh against Lewis?

Vitlay has fought ONE guy big enough, and strong enough to reach him when he uses his "lean back" defence. He got hit so often with right hands, he couldn't even get past the half way point of the fight.

How would that change in a rematch? Would Vitaly grow a couple of extra feet, or would Lewis's reach shrink between fights?

Ignore the one, main first cut. Lewis still landed enough right hands to tear apart his cheek and his mouth and lips.

Lewis was told by Steward to rough him up at the end of the second round. FOUR rounds later, it was over.

Vitaly fought a very good fight, and as tough as ****. I'm not saying he didn't.

He just lost, and lost fair and square. Most challengers don't get a rematch, even if they're unlucky or put up a great effort. It's tough, but that's just the way it is.
