they might not have a choice soon. lack of medals and boxing’s uncertain Olympic future means that the Team GB Finishing School will be facing budget cuts
One bronze medal for GB will without a shadow of a doubt cause issues, whateve the reasons it's a huge underperformance
He doesn’t have a name outside of that amateur system. Any contract he would have got would have been low balled and even pros who go into the olympics need a better track record than Richardson. yeah maybe he is more advanced in age but it was the best option for him. Olympics is a great thing. Also he doesn’t look like he would get past euro level. Just something about him seems ‘amateur’ int eh good sense. could say the same about Tom Stalker. Didn’t think we would see a world beater from him. you can be good technically but lack devil and variety. Only fighter in my head who had that mentality and was good in the pros was woodhall
Yeah they could try and hang hat on Cindy, unfortunately for them from a funding perspective her medal won't say GB. So they drop from 6 in the last Olympics to 1 in this, that's a heavy hit.
It’s post mortem analysis now. But even going in to the games. the US, Canada and GB had less fighters in totally than Uzbekistan. What exactly were people going to expect. With the AIBA corruption ruining the qualification tournaments so soon before the games. GB were never going to fill those divisions with quality in such a small amount of time.
I know a lot of kickback on GB around final qualifier selections, but with the money ploughed into the programme I think a drop from 6 medals to 1 will be cause for alarm. However maybe given they've branched out into pro's they will simply used the system to cherry pick the best future pro's
By the way let that not detract from Lewis Richardson's achievement, he qualified at the very last available opportunity, I'd suggest not even close to GB's most touted medal prospects and he has a bronze medal, congratulations and respect.
Luke Campbell didn’t have the devil in him anytime during his pro career and I thought he adapted relatively well.
The Olympic boxing tournament is corrupt. Don't you remember Roy Jones Jr. in 1988 where he lost to an opponent who did not hit him with a single punch ?
