Liam Smith is a domestic level fighter, that was a complete travesty!

Williams has now grown on me big time. Class Act and so much more skillful than smith, difference was there for all to see.

Only seen him fight a few times. Three IIRC. First time he got iced in a round by Erislandy Savon. Second time he lost on pts to Savon. Savon is obviously top quality, though. Third time was his pro debut the other day. He wasn't up against much but I thought he looked impressive. I liked the sequence of shots he finished his opponent of with. Looks promising. But CW is tough division.

Yes it sure was. I'm a big fan. He can perform better than he did tonight too.

Canelo is the only actual boxer he ever fought before tonight. So that's 2 people who he's fought who aren't complete bums and he's been taken to school in both. Only Frank's cushy relationship with WBO somehow got him a belt. Who did he ever beat for it, can anyone even remember?

You guys are so funny, all hi 5ing each other how you all wanted Williams to win beforehand and now this pathetic thread.

Smith beats up Kelly Brookback mountain and I would laugh for a week

Smith is a former world champion, hardly domestic level. Williams is even better than domestic level. Williams would beat Kelly too.

Are you like 10 years old. Calling kell Kelly doesn't make you look Cool. Sound like a child.

Anyway, you are tripping. Kell Brook would demolish Liam Smith.

Clearly Brook is on a different level.

Well, surely you cannot deny that it was a headbutt that ended Williams and that Williams should have been well up on the cards? It doesn't bode well for Smith being a level below Williams, he was only coming on well in the last two rounds because Williams got tired.

Smith was a soft world champ, his best win was John Thompson. I might have been exaggerating a bit, but if skill-wise Smith is worse than Williams, there's a case for him being only domestic level. And yes, Williams might beat Brook, but based on tonight I can't pick Liam Smith to do so.

I'm waiting for the usual GGG resident haters to claim that Canelo ruined him lol.
Smith is a pretty basic fighter, Williams handled him comfortably.

Just calling a spade a spade
Kelly is the most over hyped fighter on this forum bar none. His hype will even survive a beating from Spence, Spence will just become p4p top3.

A beating from Smith will derail him and I can't wait

Remember when the Canelo fancrowd told us that Smith was testament to Canelo's superior skills and resume to GGG's? Oh boy. Where are these guys now?

I'm going to deny that. I can tell you exactly where Williams' cut came from and it wasn't from a headbutt, certainly not from Smith's headbutt. What happened was right before Smith's apparant headbutt, Williams was leading in with his head while Smith was in his tight guard. Well Williams' eyelid scraped across the bottom edge of the "tape" part of Smith's left glove (the part of the glove around the forearm where it said "WBO") You can see that part of that left glove around his forearm had a protrusion in it right near the bottom, and that's where Liam Williams eye was as he lunged in with his head on Smith. On the slow mo replay, you can see the blood streaming down as Williams pulled out head out of Smith's guard moments before what followed with Smith coming forward.

It's important to point out that Liam Williams was leading in with his head when the cut occurred, he cut his own eyelid on the inside of Smith's left glove, the part that was covering the forearm which was protruding out slightly.

Williams wasn’t well up on the cards, he was only up by 1 point on the cards. Richie Woodhall had him up by 3 points, mostly because he scored the 2nd round and the 7th round even, two rounds that could have went to Smith.

Smith has a habit of starting slow, especially vs movers. He has good stamina, he’s got a solid chin and a tight guard (that impressively Williams was able to get through). Williams was definitely getting the better of him early on, Williams utilized good footwork and had what appeared to be a hand speed advantage. Smith weathered the storm though and by the 6th or 7th round it was clear that Williams was tiring and Smith was getting into his groove. There was then some good body work from Smith that seemed to slow down Williams even more.

Smith was coming on slowly round after round, but by the 9th, it was clear he was taking over the fight and Williams was even staggered at one point. This was never supposed to be an easy fight for Smith, Williams is a serious opponent, apparently Williams was the slight favorite going into the fight.

I thought it was a gutsy performance by Liam Smith, he faced real adversity in this fight early on, with the cut and being down on the cards, but battled his way back and was on his way to closing the show when Williams got cut. It wasn’t from a head butt, it wasn’t exactly from a punch either, but it wouldn’t have been fair to go to the scorecards given that it was caused by Williams lunging in with his head and Smith simply covering up. Smith may have retaliated by lunging his head in afterwords, but that wasn’t what caused the cut, and going into the fight there was a concern from the Smith camp about Williams using his head.

If the cut didn’t happen, chances are Smith would have either stopped Williams or would have won the last 3 rounds and won a decision. It was a good fight, a good scrap. Williams cut was very unfortunate as it was right on his eyelid and in a very dangerous area that’s going to be difficult to heal, especially since he blinks so much as it is. Smith’s cut wasn’t good either, but it should heal in a few weeks time. Williams cut on his eyelid, that could derail his career, and it could jeopardize a rematch.

A Williams vs Smith rematch would be interesting, but with that cut bothering Williams I don’t expect him to start as fast if there was a rematch. Smith vs Cotto for the actual WBO world title is a possibility later this year if the rematch with Williams doesn’t happen.

Smith not making weight for the interim title shouldn’t derail his hopes to reclaim the WBO title that he lost to Canelo, if Canelo vacates it, presumably after the Chavez fight. (especially when you consider they only gave Smith 1 hour to lose that last pound instead of 2 hours like they were supposed to)

It’s different types of skill. Williams is a more dynamic boxer puncher, is more of a fluid boxer with more natural athleticism. Smith is more of a skilled brawler who keeps in his tight guard and just walks you down trying to trap you into a corner so he can unload on you. That’s why he starts slow at times, because if he’s fighting a mover, he’s not going to throw if he’s out of punching range.

I would say that Smith is more skilled defensively, is more skilled at punching at precise angles, is more battle tested, and is better at judging space (knowing when to punch). He really knows how to get close to you, then dig in a punch to the side of your body or something out of nowhere. A lot of people don’t seem to rate Smith because they saw how easily Williams was outboxing him early on, but once he gets going he can take you out rather quickly.

Williams can win rounds because he can out volume you with fluid punches from the outside early on. That will allow him to win rounds, but over the course of 12 rounds I think he’d have a difficult time beating someone like a Kell Brook. Smith on the other hand may give away rounds early but I could see him coming on in the 2nd half of the fight similar to what we saw vs Williams.
