It really is, much like the Panamanian rhythm. I think Famechon had the better defence and movement but Rose was the better 'fighter' as his offence and mentality were better. Rudkin is brilliant my favrouite British fighter ever. McGown vs Rudkin II, is the best British title fight I have ever seen, also the Rudkin vs Clarke II is also very good. :rofl:rofl
Same as my dad. I watched the Rose doc and he reminded me of dad, Kindred spirits! I reckon a drinking competition between them would of went all the way to a split decision as well.
Didn't Ray Mitchell claim he possessed the unique ability to actually count and tally each blow as it landed when trying to explain his bizarre card?? Pretty remarkable party trick if true That said Vic Patrick's card was a tad wide Lionels way also so Australia sure wasn't immune to home town bias either back in the 60's.
I know, I don't really understand Patrick's scorecard 70-63. Presumably he gave Lionel a couple of 5-3 rounds but I don't where they could of come from. most of the ringsiders and newspapers had it 1 point either way and a couple scored it a draw.
Ray spun the yarn that he would count the punches as they landed.... always being calculated in the favour of one fighter at a time. His act was to add and subtract punches in some odd way?? He must have been counting on just the one hand at Kooyong. Old Vic Patrick... experienced referee and judge, but never accused of being great at either...
I know yes, I was thinking that last night watching it. We could endup playing one of them. I'm not saying no more
I've only ever seen the last 5 rounds of this and there was literally nothing in it (although Rudkin was definately in better nick at the finish) and going by what the commentators were saying the first 2/3rds of the fight were tight as well,so the judging has to be considered very suspect. Actually 1969 was a vintage year for dodgy Aussie decisions as Fammo-Harada 1 was an unpopular verdict as well but seeing as Willie Pep was the referee and sole judge hometown bias can't be blamed for that one. It just seems Willie like Vic Patrick was another great old fighter who couldn't judge/referee for ****.
