Depends on psychology of both fighters. Liston might not really take Spinks seriously and lets him hang around for 6 rounds or so. Spinks probably hits as hard as Eddie Machen who lasted 12 rounds with Liston, and Liston was penalized three times for low blows in that match, a sign of desperation. Obviously the first 3 rounds are the most dangerous for Spinks. Liston by TKO or decision.
After the Holmes fights, Spinks as a heavyweight was a joke. He beat Stefan Tangstrad and a man ravaged by alchoholism. Then collected 13 million for his ' effort ' v Tyson. I'm surprised he wasn't counted out before he climbed the steps that night. If it's the Liston of the Patterson fights , then Spinks is facing the same mental trauma as the night of the Tyson bout. He's up against a perceived unbeatable monster. How can the outcome be any different ? Spinks' mindset makes it a no contest .
Good point,Mr Magoo, about Shavers. That one would depend on Earnie connecting early. The likes of Foreman and Liston would take him out quickly, though, imo.
I personally feel, it much more the threat Of Tyson that beat Spinks then what physically happened in the ring that night. The intimidation factor completely took Spinks out of his game. Even at the introduction and weigh in, Spinks seemed jittery. Imagine how intimidating Charles "Sonny "Liston would be. Esp the versions before Ali. Liston was Tyson Times 2 in the intimidating factor. Spinks like he did against Tyson would beat himself. The punches landed was just the icing on the cake.
I think it likely that Spinks would always have been intimidated by Tyson than Liston. Why? Because just five months earlier he got to witness Tyson utterly demolish an old foe in just four rounds who Spinks fought life and death with over a combined 30. That's a huge factor. That and probably less than 15% of the population was giving him any real chance at prevailing against Iron Mike. Add to that the inactivity and the knowledge that he new he was slipping and it makes for a bad evening in the ropes. Michael wasn't there to win a title. He was there to ensure his retirement fund
Yes, and I could say Spinks saw Liston decimate Patterson x 2. Its all hypothetical. To me Liston was more intimidating then Tyson. Esp when they talked lol.
Prolly won't find it now but saw in a mag a couple of weeks ago Spinks rambling about how fearsome Tyson was. Would have been before they fought. Spinks beats Shavers.
And if Patterson were a former foe ( as Holmes was ) who Spinks practicality sold his soul to beat then I could certainly see how Sonny taking him apart would make him shlt his pants. Holmes and Spinks battles life and death for a combined 30 rounds in two very close fights with Larry probably deserving the win in the rematch. Less than two years later ( 21 months ) Tyson demolished Larry in record time without working up a sweat. I can see how that would be demoralizing to Spinks and his confidence.
Picture a long-haired house cat being thrown over the fence, and landing on a mean junkyard dog with little room for the cat to run, and you'll get a picture on how this one ends. Liston KO inside 3 rounds.
Basically Spinks was heavier and taller than Patterson.Spinks' chin was better and his best heavyweight wins( Holmes 2X) are much more impressive than Patterson's . I can imagine an Ali type Spinks win.
