Gaz, what's the deal with Tommy stepping up to LHW to fight Andries and then jumping back down to 160 for Roldan? Did they see Andries as an easy fight? :think

Id say so, and Andries hit the canvas as much as any fighter ive watched in that fight, so it was indeed easy for tommy:good

There are so many things to admire from Hearns in that fight. That jab, the hook to the body, the right to the body that he whips in every so often... Incredible.

Then in the second round he jabs to the body and in a snap brings it up to the head. And the KO... ouch. Cuevas wasn't some pushover either, was he?

 

It was a funny one mate. Him and Leonard were in a tit for tat competition to be 4/5 weight champs. Tommy beats Andries to get to 4 but then Leonard goes and gets 5 when getting "2 for 1" against Donnie LaLonde.

Being a the first ever "4 weight world champ" was the big thing at the time. Arguello had failed but you could see either Leonard or Hearns was going to get there.

But, to answer your question, yes Andries was seen as a easy title for Hearns to take.

There were also a lot of tough guys at 175 around that time that didn't generate a lot of money. People like Johnson, Embe (sp?) and Stewart were all tough fights for Tommy for no more money that a defence a 160 would generate.

I'm not quite sure why you like Mijares so much...

I mean, he was good, but I saw Vic kicking his ass when the fight was signed. Mijares always gave me the impression of being a fighter that needs to feel in control at all times to win.

I agree with you on the Darchinyan part though. As I always testify to, I picked the Crabman to win that fight.

He's a fighter that needs to find his rhythm to convince, not necessarily being "in control". I mean, the Munoz performance is one of his best but he was never fully comfortable in there, what with the rough house tactics employed by Alex. Every time he tried to get comfortable he'd have a head/shoulder drilled into his face, yet he was able to win widely and perform above the expectations of some.

The Kawashima fight too, where he was dropped and hurt by a humongous right hand but got up to re-assert himself and win. People(not saying you are if course) often watch the splattering Vic gave and think he never really overcame adversity/a challenge, but he wasn't rated top 5 pound for pound by a good few people for no reason.
